Amerks Lose after Costly Turnovers and Giving Up Another Third Period Lead

$

The good news is that the Amerks are tied for fourth in total points in the American Hockey League. The bad news is that they continue to giveaway points costing them in the standings.

Rochester could easily be in third place overall in the league if it wasn’t for giving up third period leads. In 21 games played the Amerks have given up a lead six times in the third period. In those six games they have an overtime win, shootout win, one regulation loss, two overtime losses and the shootout loss on Friday night.

Considering the parent team is tied for last place in the NHL some may think we’re starting to get greedy in Rochester.

“In my opinion we let off the gas pedal a little bit,” Garret Ross said after the game. “When we’re dominating a team and putting all the pressure on them we need to stay consistent with that and do it for a full 60 minutes.”

That’s the story of the season so far. The talent appears to be here. They know what they need to do yet it continues to happen.

Taylor said, “It’s not consistency, it’s mental mistakes. It’s not knowing how to win the right way. We have to change it.”

Goals by Seth Griffith, Steve Moses and Garret Ross gave the Amerks a 3-1 lead early in the second period but that quickly vanished. Adam Chapie and Vince Pedrie scored two goals within three minutes to tie the game half way through the second period.

“We turned the puck over a couple of times and it was in the back of our net,” Chris Taylor said about losing the lead.

Matt Tennyson said, “second period there we had a couple of costly turnovers in the neutral zone. Obviously that can’t happen.”

Two turnovers by Nick Baptiste were costly as they lead to those two goals by the Wolf Pack. An attempted break out along the boards in the Amerks zone and then a turnover at center ice.

Some credit does go to WolfPack goalie Alexandar Georgiev who made 34 saves in the game.

Taylor added on, “One of those games that we had a lot of chances and when you don’t score on your chances you know something is going to backfire.”

Evan Rodrigues gave the Amerks a 4-3 lead with a power play goal with 6:20 left in the second period. Alexander Nylander, who was playing a point position on the power play, made a pass to Brendan Guhle who sent a perfect saucer pass to Rodrigues on the far side.

A third period play was reviewed by the officials but determined the puck didn’t cross the line. Here’s a poor resolution screen grab to show how close it was.

Things weren’t looking good when Casey Nelson and Evan Rodrigues went to the penalty box at the same time for tripping calls at 10:59 of the third.

A superb penalty kill by the Amerks should have been a spark but it wasn’t.

Matt Tennyson was a big part of that kill in his first game with the Amerks. Asked if that’s a positive even after losing he said, “Any time you can kill a full two minutes of a 5 on 3 it’s a positive and I thought we had a little momentum there but we have to take care of some other things to make sure we put ourselves in a good position to win.”

“That’s the heart breaker of the whole game,” was the response when Taylor was asked about the kill. “Those guys killed a 5 on 3 and all of a sudden we have a power play and at the end of the power play we throw a puck up blind, trying a no look pass. All of a sudden it’s in the back of the net. Thats disheartening for me. The whole game. Sums it up right there.”

The blind pass he’s referring to was by Hudson Fasching. Scott Kosmachuk had exited the penalty box, entered his zone, stole the puck and it was a two on one with Cole Schneider against Stuart Percy. Kosmachuk to Schneider back to Kosmachuk. The puck looked like it went in off of the leg of Kosmachuk.

The overtime was an exciting back and forth three on three. Brendan Guhle almost had a highlight goal when he put his stick between his legs but Georgiev just barely got a piece of it to make the save.

The shootout went five rounds with CJ Smith scoring the only goal for Rochester. Peter Holland scored first for the Wolf Pack and Kosmachuk scored the winner.

Garret Ross “We got a point out of it but we’re not too happy with it.”

I don’t even think we deserved the point after that,” Chris Taylor said after the game. “I’m not happy at all.”

Amerks End the Week with a 60 Minute Win

This Amerks team is fun. It’s only 22 games into the season but they’re playing as a team that should make those proud that have previously represented the logo.

The team defeated the league leading Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins on Saturday night after two subpar performances. And without a top six forward that was called up.

Eric Cornel missed two games as a healthy scratch but jumped right back into the lineup after Hudson Fasching was called up and scored the Amerks first goal of the game as the team went on to win 5-2.

It wasn’t a perfect game in any way as they gave up another short handed goal. The Amerks are now tied with the Penguins and Thunderbirds with six short handed goals against. Rochester also had seven power play opportunities and only scored on one.

We’ve become greedy in 22 games.

The opening period was scoreless before an action filled second.

Teddy Blueger scored first at 3:30 after he tipped in a shot by Andrey Pedan. It was also teddy bear toss night so the teams got an extra intermission as the stuffed animals were scooped up. Only fitting that a guy named Teddy scored on a night like this (too easy).

That was the only lead of the night for the Penguins when Eric Cornel scored at 8:50 of the first followed by goals from Evan Rodrigues and Garret Ross within a five minute span. Rodrigues scored his second of the game at 18:19 of the second period to give the Amerks a 4-1 lead heading into the third.

Looking for more of a breakdown on the goal scoring? Here’s two links: Chirps from Center Ice (a site like this) || Amerks.com article

Teddy struck again late in the third at 14:29 with a short handed goal after out hustling Guhle and a poor play by Ullmark. Teddy grabbed the puck, wrapped around the net and made it a 4-2 game.

Considering previous third period collapses this season there was reason to show concern it could happen again but it didn’t.

CJ Smith found his way behind the play with 56 seconds left in the game to score an empty net goal and solidify the Amerks win.

It was a 60 minute win. They scored, battled and besides the short handed goal against they didn’t give up much.

The Penguins were without their number one goalie Casey DeSmith while the Amerks had their number one goalie Linus Ullmark in net. The officiating may have been questionable at times but when it’s a win we’ll say it was a well officiated game.

After an overtime loss Wednesday and a shootout loss on Friday that no one was happy with the team capped off the week with a solid win on the road playing 60 minutes of hockey against another top team in the league.

11 Amerks players earned a point on Saturday night. Rodrigues earned the first star w/ 2G+1A. CJ Smith had 1G+2A. Cornel and Ross scored the other goals as noted above. Assists tonight for Percy, Baptiste, Krause, Nelson, Griffith, Blackwell and Guhle. Ullmark with a 22 save night.

CJ Smith moves into 6th in the league in scoring w/ 7G+16A in 23 games.

With another point tonight Guhle moves into 10th place in the league for defensemen w/ 5G+9A.

The Amerks have scored 29 goals in six games and earned points in six straight games. The team also has 29 points in 22 games.

Being a Family and Leadership is Key to the Amerks Success

The Amerks are on the road this weekend for their first set of three games over three days. Well, technically three games in less than three days since they play on Sunday afternoon at 3pm. The team is traveling to Springfield, Hartford and Bridgeport. A long bus ride there but cities within close proximity to each other.

When asked about the first long weekend of the season Matt Tennyson said, “It’s a grind for sure. I’ve been through it before. That afternoon game is definitely a grind but that’s the American League. No real way to sugar coat. It’s not fun but find a way to battle through it.”

“It’s time to kind of get into the meat and potatoes of the season, time to get used to it I guess,” Steve Moses said about heading the three upcoming games.

One thing (of many) that the Amerks have going for them on the trip is their road record at 6-1-3-1. One regulation loss on the road in 11 games is pretty good early in the season.

“I think we’ve had some success on the road and now just have to keep it up, be consistent and play 60 minutes all three nights,” CJ Smith commented on the road record.

Chris Taylor said, “We’ve been good on the road all year so I don’t expect anything different. The guys are getting close and it’s nice to get on the road.”

“We have a lot of depth. We’re taking 24 guys with us. We have a lot of guys that can go in and out of the lineup. it’s pressure on each other, play good. Internally we want to put pressure on each other and externally we want to play hard against the other team.”

Steve Moses talked about the team saying, “I think guys work hard. We have a lot of fun. A lot of good players, a lot of competition within the team. That breeds success and the atmosphere has been great around the rink.”

Matt Tennyson has only played in two games for the Amerks since the Sabres sent him to the team but he’s already made an impact especially on the penalty kill and he has noticed the key to success.

“Just buying into the system. I think everyones playing the way they need to be playing,” Matt Tennyson said. “I think we’ve just been gelling, been a lot of fun, I think guys can be relaxed, play relaxed and just have a lot of fun.”

“I think he’s very happy,” Chris Taylor said about Tennyson. “Coming down here, not wanting to be down in the American League but when he came down here just seeing the culture, what we’re doing, how we’re doing it and we’re winning so he’s very happy to be here.”

Players being happy to be in Rochester is something that has been missing. Over the course of the off season there was a lot of talk by Jason Botterill and Chris Taylor about the need to win, develop and also change the culture. They were confident that it would be done. They wanted the team to be a family and it’s happened quicker than they expected.

“We had ideas of what we thought and we’re very excited where we’re at this early in the year especially with the injuries we’ve gone through. We thought it was going to be a lot harder actually because we felt a lot of changes needed to be made,” Taylor said. “We’re extremely happy right now but we’re still a long ways away from the end of the season.”

When you look at NHL teams like Toronto, Tampa, Columbus and Pittsburgh you’ll see that their success has been built off of what they’ve accomplished with their AHL teams. Success works its way up.

The three letter word fun has been mentioned more this season than I’ve heard in the last 10 years I’ve been writing about this team.

Steve Moses said, “I think a lot of players think its fun when you’re winning which is true but when you’re having fun you’re winning. I think the having fun comes first which takes time to figure out but in my career when you’re enjoying yourself the results follow.”

Moses has spent the bulk of his last five seasons oversea’s playing and joined the Amerks as a new face in the organization. This may be new to anyone who’s been around but it’s normal for him. He said, “I’m new here so this is all I’ve known. I think that there’s a lot of winning players that have come over to the team that have helped, obviously Porter has been a great captain and a lot of great leaders on the team. That culture has kind of been there from game one so for me so its what I’m accustomed too.”

CJ Smith is a rookie and has recognized the leadership around the team saying, “I think a lot has to do with the leadership in the locker room. I think we have some older guys who do a pretty good job in there just keep everybody as a team, keeping everyone pretty close. I think that’s been a big part of our success so far.” He added, “I don’t think theres been a clique of vets vs rookies so to speak. I think they’ve done a good job. Everybody feels welcome in the locker room. If a younger guy does speak up it’s listened to and heard by the vets too. We have a good mix of people talking.”

One could say that there’s a lot of cliche words when it comes to team building. Words like character, leadership, family and culture. They aren’t though. They’re the requirements of a successful team. The resumes of Chris Taylor, Gord Dineen and Toby Petersen show that they’ve been around a variety of teams to know what it would take.

“That’s what we tried to bring. We wanted to bring some character guys that I felt we’re going to do that for us and thats what I stressed a lot and our coaching staff stressed a lot,” Taylor said. “Being together and always being with each other. Making sure we know what’s going on with each other outside the rink, not just inside the rink. I think thats what creates a family. When that happens I believe you care about each other, want to win for each other and protect each other.

As they were getting ready to depart on the five hour bus ride the team shared that it’s up to the younger guys to head to the store and buy some movies. Who gets to decide what to watch? The leadership. No one knew what the choices would be but so far this season the choices have received positive feedback compared to previous years (no movie titles have been shared yet).

Chris Taylor talked about the atmosphere on the bus saying, “You want them talking on the bus. You don’t want to see them putting on headphones and doing their own conversations and watching their own movies. Everyones watching together, laughing together, playing cards together and enjoying each others company.”

“When you care about each other you play harder for each other,” Taylor said about continuing the success as the season goes on.

Amerks Defeat Springfield to Continue Success on the Road

The Amerks continued their road success on Friday night defeating the Springfield Thunderbirds 2-1. Linus Ullmark got the win in net with 18 saves to extend the teams road record to 7-1-3-1.

Rochester dominated play through the first period and didn’t allow a shot against Ullmark until six minutes into the first period.

Seth Griffith scored first at 7:15 with assists to Guhle and Nelson. The play was all Griffith though. He took a pass at center ice from Guhle but didn’t see a way to advance so he took it back to the top of the face off circles in front of Ullmark to setup a play. He gave the ice a look, took off the right side, chipped it off the boards entering the zone and sniped one short side top corner the net past Samuel Montembeault.

The Amerks lead 13-6 in shots in the first period and in a scoreless second period lead 13-7 in shots. Each team had two power play opportunities in the second as well.

With about 1.5 seconds left in the second period Linus Ullmark made a fantastic toe save.

Kyle Criscuolo scored in his first game back with the Amerks at 7:18 of the third. A couple of quick dekes and a backhand under the right pad to give the Amerks a 2-0 lead.

Just over four minutes later at 12:31 of the third the Thunderbirds made it a close 2-1 game off a goal by Maxime Fortunus. Ludwig Bystrom took a shot that looked like it was slightly redirected by a stick, off the cross bar and landed right at the feet of Fortunus.

Colin Blackwell drew a penalty with 45.2 seconds left in the game as Springfield had pulled their goalie. Jayce Hawryluk was called for interference as he tried to stop Blackwell who was pressuring the puck carrier.

Some terrific forechecking in the last 30 seconds of the game by Malone, Cornel and Ross and prevented any sort of attempt at a last minute rush by the Thunderbirds. The game ended with the Amerks leading the third period 11-6 in shots for a game total of 37-19.

The game was a team effort with everyone on the bench contributing in some way. There was continued offensive pressure throughout the entire game from every line.

One of two players that didn’t get a shot on the score sheet was Alexander Nylander but the sheet is deceiving as he contributed in line mate Nick Baptiste recording six shots throughout the game.

Springfield head coach Geordie Kinnear said after the game, “That’s a good hockey team that beat us.”

Two more games to go this weekend, Saturday vs Hartford and Sunday vs Bridgeport.

Wolf Pack Defeat the Amerks in a Shootout

The Amerks did something familiar on Saturday night, played beyond regulation time in a game this season. Out of 24 games played this season they’ve played 11 of them in overtime, five have gone into a shootout.

The good is that the team has extended their point streak to eight straight games. Also, in those 24 games played they’ve only lost once in regulation. Only time will tell how much one point vs two points impacts the standings but when percentages matter they’re on the right path and still in second place.

Peter Holland scored the first goal of the game at 12:26 of the first period all alone in front of the Amerks net. Linus Ullmark made the initial save but Holland buried the rebound. As you can see in the clip below Holland just walked in front of the net and Scott Kosmachuk didn’t hesitate getting the puck to him.

Gill converted a turnover into a pass to CJ Smith with just over four minutes remaining in the first period for a scoring chance but Chris Nell made a great save.

The first period ended with the Wolf Pack leading 1-0 and both teams tied in shots at nine.

CJ Smith scored at 13:20 of the second period thanks to a bounce that went his way. He put the puck on net and it went off the stick of a Wolf Pack player into the net.

Eric Cornel was sent to the box for high sticking in the third period and the Wolf Pack went on the power play for the fourth time. Excellent puck movement by the Wolf Pack on the power play and Holland was able to score for the second time in the game from the bottom of the face off circle.

Kyle Criscuolo showed some grit 7:56 into the 3rd period when he went in hard against Brandon Crawly to get the puck and ended up dropping the gloves. He was given two minutes for boarding and two for roughing. Vinni Lettieri also earned two for roughing.

Colin Blackwell lead the way towards the Amerks second goal of the game to tie it at two. Blackwell took the puck into the Wolf Pack end, around the net, back hand pass to Zach Redmond who ripped a quick wrist shot into the net.

Sean Malone had an excellent chance at the last second of regulation time but it either went off the cross bar or Wolf Pack goalie Chris Nell got a piece of it.

(The above gifs aren’t the best due to the live feed of the game not being the best)

The Amerks had a two minute power play in overtime but a combination of blocked shots, good saves and a few bad passes allowed the Wolf Pack to kill it off.

In the shootout CJ Smith and Seth Griffith scored. Eric Cornel and Colin Blackwell did not. On the Wolf Pack side they had Adam Tambellini, Peter Holland and Scott Kosmachuk score. Only Vinni Lettieri did not.

Here’s the shootout highlights:

Ullmark is now 2-1 in shootouts this season with a .500 save percentage. Last season Ullmark was 1-2 in shootouts with a .714 save percentage. Wilcox is 0-2 this season with a .500 save percentage as well in shootouts.

The Amerks finish off their road trip Sunday afternoon with a 3pm game in Bridgeport.

Amerks Unbelievable Weekend and Divisional Games Ahead

The Amerks capped off an impressive three in three weekend coming back home with five out of six points. The team has nine games left in the month of December and all of them are against divisional teams.

I asked Chris Taylor if it was a pretty good and he responded with, “Pretty good weekend? It was an unbelievable weekend. Who doesn’t want 5 out of 6 points? That’s the the positivity that we’re trying to create about everything. Everybody tries to find a negative out of the weekend and there’s no negative out of the weekend. It’s 5 out of 6 points. For me its all about being positive and any weekend you get 5 out of 6 points you’re going to lead the whole league if you keep on doing that. A great weekend. Three games in less than 48 hours.”

The team had a dominating win on Friday night [ RECAP HERE ], battled from behind losing in a shootout on Saturday [ RECAP HERE ] and another dominating win on Sunday afternoon [ RECAP HERE ].

“Sunday Wilcox played unbelievable, kept us in the game. We need everyone in the whole lineup to make contributions and he made a contribution,” Taylor on the Sunday game by Adam Wilcox.

On the Saturday game CJ Smith said, “That wasn’t the game we wanted to play and we found a way to get a point which is always big. We responded really well on Sunday coming out with the game plan we wanted to play and the way we wanted to play.”

I asked if the Sunday win helped the long bus ride home and he laughed saying, “That Sunday win helps the bus ride a little more.”

Looking forward the team has nine divisional games to close out the month of December, two against league leading Toronto Marlies. There’s also two games vs Utica, one vs Belleville and four against Laval. Five of those nine games are at home, including two this week.

Utica is up first on Wednesday night, a team they’ve played five times already this season winning only one of those games. Two losses, an overtime loss and shootout loss.

Referring to the Toronto game on Friday night Nathan Paetsch said, “It’s a big measuring stick for us at home, somewhere we can really see where our team is at.”

Talking about the division in general and the streak Syracuse is on Chris Taylor said, “Every team is good in this league, every game is tough.”

Injury Updates

Nathan Paetsch has started skating on his own before practice this week. He said he hopes to back “sooner rather than later.”

Kevin Porter, Barry Goers and Justin Bailey are skating with the team in practice.

Goers has been cleared to play and now it’s just a matter of who he goes into the lineup for.

Kevin Porter is expected back this week.

Justin Bailey has been updated to 1 week away.

Amerks vs Utica Game Day Notes and Quotes

The Amerks are coming off of an “unbelievable weekend” [ Read more here ] and are facing off against the Utica Comets tonight for the sixth time this season. In the five games so far the Amerks are 1-2-1-1. The only win was a shootout win on the road. The two regulation losses have both been in Rochester.

Two players to watch on the Comets roster are Reid Boucher and goalie Thatcher Demko. Boucher leads the Comets with 13 goals and 11 assists for 24 points in 22 games. Demko has only allowed five goals in four games vs the Amerks.

CJ Smith was asked about shutting down Boucher and he said, “Just taking away time and space out there. Really not letting him shoot the puck. Obviously he has a good shot. Can’t shoot the puck you can’t score.”

On the Amerks side, CJ Smith is the team leader in points and eighth in the league in scoring with 8 goals and 17 assists in 25 games. Linus Ullmark will start for the Amerks and the Comets have been able to score seven times on him in three games.

Chris Taylor said this about the Comets, “They’re a good team so we have to be prepared. They have good goaltending, they’re well coached. We know what we’re in for. They’re a stingy team and tough to score goals against.”

Road games are often referred to as simpler and that’s where the Amerks have had more success this season. Zach Redmond referenced that for tonights home game saying, “We have all the skill in the world we just need to find a way to stay within our structure, play simple and almost play a road game. Eliminate mistakes and find a way to work hard like we do on the road.”

Kevin Porter is expected to play after being out for two weeks and missing six games.

Scratches: Barry Goers, Conor Allen, Dalton Smith and Adam Krause. Justin Bailey is still on the injured list.

Recap: CJ Smith and Ullmark Lead Amerks to Win over Comets

Rookie forward CJ Smith is on a hot streak and on Wednesday night lead the Amerks to a 3-1 win over the Utica Comets. He tallied one goal, one assist and a team leading seven shots on net.

He’s one of four players that has played in all 26 games so far this season and he’s earned a point this season in all but eight games this season. With 9G+18A in those 26 games he’s the leading rookie scorer in The AHL.

Comets forward Michael Carcone opened the scoring only 87 seconds into the game but the Amerks shrugged it off and moved on.

“Looking back at how we’ve been playing the last couple of weeks it was pretty easy because we know that we’re a good team and we know we can come back from that one,” Linus Ullmark said. “Just focusing on the making the next save.”

CJ Smith on the mentality after the first goal, “Just had to look past it, just get back down in there end and keep shooting the puck.”

Ullmark earned his 12th win of the season with 29 saves. He hasn’t lost a game in regulation since October 28th.

“Linus played really well for us, made some big saves when we needed them,” Chris Taylor said after the game. “Again, we got some good saves from Linus, created some good scoring opportunities and got them.”

Colin Blackwell set the play in motion for the Amerks to score first. Face off win back to Nelson, pass to Gill, pass to Moses and the one timer hit the back of the net. One of those plays that every team works on in practice and it was executed perfectly.

What turned out to be the game winner was scored by Stuart Percy in the 2nd period with assists to CJ Smith and Nick Baptiste. The play was set in motion by some excellent forechecking by Criscuolo and Baptiste keeping the puck in the Comets zone.

CJ Smith scored the third goal of the game as he tracked the rebound off a shot by Seth Griffith. Demko kicked the puck to the side where Smith was waiting to bury it and he did just that.

The only Amerks penalty of the game, there was only two penalties the whole game, was called with just under four minutes remaining in the third. Utica pulled their goalie, Amerks killed off the penalty and didn’t back down as the clocked ticked away.

This was the Amerks fourth win in five games and in all five games they’ve played the best as a team this season but the expectations are still higher. They’ll have another big game on Friday night against the league leading Toronto Marlies.

Chris Taylor talked about expectations after the game saying, “We have to be better. We know that, talked about it after the game. We have high expectations of this team. Why we have high expectations is because the players put the high expectations on all of us. How they’ve played in the last 3 games. The last 10 games. Now our expectations are high. They put that on themselves, now they have to carry it. When we’re at home we have to be a lot better.”

With the win the Amerks are currently on a 10 game point streak and so far this season have earned points in 21 out of 26 games.

Notes and Quotes for Tonights Amerks vs Marlies Game

$

There’s some excitement and anticipation for tonights hockey game at the War Memorial between the Toronto Marlies and Rochester Americans. The Marlies are the number one team in The AHL but the Amerks aren’t too far behind overall in the league. In the division there’s a four point spread between the two teams.

“We understand where they are in the standings. It’s not a measuring stick for us for us,” Chris Taylor said about where the teams are. “I think it’s just how we play and how we come back at home.”

The Amerks are coming off of a 3-1 win at home on Wednesday night but the expectations were higher.

Chris Taylor added, “I don’t think we played that well on Wednesday so we have to have a better response. It’s all about our team and how we focus on what we’re doing.”

“It’s just another game, don’t want to think about it too much,” is what Seth Griffith had to say about playing against his former team. “Obviously we’re really excited and want to get the win against these guys. We play them a lot throughout the year so can’t get too high if you come out on top.”

Other former Marlies include Andrew MacWilliam, Stuart Percy and assistant coach Gord Dineen.

Leading the Amerks is the scoring of CJ Smith, Sahir Gill, Stuart Percy, Zach Redmond and also Seth Griffith who has 3G+4A in seven games with the Amerks. Rochester is fourth in the league in scoring with 88 goals.

Over on the Marlies they’re being lead by the goaltending duo of Garret Sparks and Calvin Pickard. Toronto leads the league with the fewest goals against at 47.

Seth Griffith recognized the goaltending of the Marlies and said, “It’ll be a good test for us offensively.”

“It always starts with just the simple shot to the net and get them scrambling in the defensive zone,” is what Stuart Percy had to say about beating them.

Linus Ullmark will be starting again for the Amerks. Ullmark hasn’t lost a game in regulation since October 28. Since then he’s won nine games, has two loses in overtime and one shootout loss.

Percy also talked about what’s on the line with the game saying, “We have to take advantage of home ice advantage. Set the tone for the regular season and hopefully a spring matchup maybe as well.”

Over the last five seasons the Marlies have the advantage with a 24-12-1-1 record over the Amerks. Last season the Amerks were 6-3-0-1 against them.

“They’ve always been a top team. Always been a good team. We’ve had some good battles with them,” Taylor said talking about the history between the two teams. “They’re exciting games and we always get excited playing against them.”

Unless something changes between this afternoon and game time Justin Bailey will be in the lineup for the first time since November 18th. He’s missed 10 games recovering from a lower body injury.

One other note is that Nathan Paetsch was on the ice skating with the team for the first time since suffering a leg injury on October 13th.

A decision is expected after the game on Saturday night on whether or not Alexander Nylander will be allowed to play for Sweden in the World Juniors. Sweden has an exhibition game against Denmark on Monday at Bill Gray’s Ice Plex in Rochester. With a lot of depth on the Amerks roster it’s probably a safe assumption that Nylander will be allowed to play.

CJ Smith has Skill, Vision and a Development Mindset

Last March when the college hockey season came to an end the Buffalo Sabres went out and signed CJ Smith, the leading scorer for UMass-Lowell. A player that was on the radar of a number of teams.

Earlier this week he played in his 26th game as a Rochester American and moved into the lead as the leagues top scoring rookie with 9G+18A and moved into 5th overall.

The point totals are impressive but wasn’t a focus at the start of the season.

“I wasn’t too worried about points coming in just to start,” CJ Smith said after Wednesday nights win. “Just trying to develop. In this league sometimes its really not about points, its learning about being consistent every night. Sometimes you play better when you don’t get a point.”

That’s the mind set of a mature player. Credit to the coaching staff as well that has been around long enough to help keep the focus on the main goal, playing in the NHL.

Chris Taylor talked about focus saying, “I think our leadership group in the room has helped him out. We didn’t have to count on him at the start of the year and he’s just kind of filled in to that role. He’s played with good players and I think he’s benefited from that. He’s also taking care of himself and what he needs to do and how he’s doing it and it’s snowballing from there. He’s getting a lot of confidence and the team has a lot of confidence right now.”

Teammate Linus Ullmark has noticed his confidence saying, “If you look at guys like Sidney Crosby and Tavares and those guys they’re not slowing down at all when they’re coming down the wing. The same thing as CJ, he’s looking more and more confident every night. If he can keep this up he’ll have a shot at the show.”

Confidence isn’t lacking for Smith right now. When you watch him play he’s everywhere.

“He’s not scared to go touch the puck first in the corners. There’s a big difference. Skill, vision, smarts.. you actually have to go in there and be dirty, be one of those guys that’s not afraid to get hit. Take a big hit to make a play,” Chris Taylor said talking about his game after Wednesdays win. “He’ll go get in front of the net and he’ll go touch the puck first even though he knows he’s going to get hit hard and that’s why he’s getting more ice time.”

At 5’11” vision is something that CJ said he has always had playing hockey. “I was always a smaller player growing up. I kind of had to see my way through the game. When I grew up I played up a couple years so they were always a lot bigger. Just learned have to see the ice a lot better as a kid.”

The next step is for the coaching staff to help him keep this pace up, keep going and be an every day player. Averaging a point per game is a good start. He’s a smart hockey player which allows him to make quick decisions to be quick enough to be that player.

“Some guys just have that little extra hockey IQ as we say. He has great skill. Great hands. It’s not like he’s only using his hands and his skill. He’s also a hard working guy. He can do all those things in high speed,” is what Ullmark had to say about the skill that CJ brings.

Every hockey player has a goal of playing in the NHL. Some expect they’ll be there the moment they’re drafted. Others know they’ll have to put in some more work to get there. In The AHL players come and go that expect an NHL roster spot simply based on the depth chart. The ones who have NHL success are the ones that know they’re in the minors to be prepared for the big jump.

CJ Smith arrived with the expectations of playing here saying, “I knew I’d probably have to spend a season down in The AHL. Get a little stronger, play wth some bigger bodies, pro guys. I knew I’d be here in Rochester, just wanted to get better working out in the gym and getting better every day.”

He’s been getter better every game, is always on the ice well after practice has ended and is showing all of the signs of someone putting in the work to have a long hockey career.

Recapping Another Excellent Weekend for the Amerks

It’s another Monday morning in Rochester, NY and the Rochester Americans are coming off of another weekend that should be talked about with a win and a loss.

A week ago the team finished the weekend with a three day road trip with three games in less than 48 hours and finished with 5 out of 6 points.

This weekend the team lost 3-2 against the Toronto Marlies on Friday night and on Saturday night came back from two goals down and won in overtime against the Utica Comets. Video highlights of both games available at the bottom.

The Toronto Marlies have been the top team in the league since the season opened but so have the Amerks. How top teams play against each other is the story, not necessarily who won or lost.

After the game on Friday night Linus Ullmark said, “We’ve showed time and time again that we’re a team to be recognized this season. We just hope that we can keep the run going until the post season and hopefully during post season too.”

Brendan Guhle spoke with confidence after the game on Friday saying, “We know we have it in here to beat those guys. The way we looked at it was a test for them and I think we outplayed them. We play them again we’ll win.”

It’s the middle of December and the team is confident that they are a top team in this league and willing to talk about it. They’ve talked about the high expectations they’re putting on themselves and what they need to do to achieve those expectations.

“I think our team is a really good team. We didn’t use a measuring stick against Toronto,” is what Chris Taylor said after the game. He continued, “We use a measuring stick against ourselves every night and I believe that we’re going to keep getting better. It’s a learning process.”

This team is special. This team is putting meaning back behind the Amerks crest that used to be the standard. They’re here to be a family, develop, care about the community and make sure they’re better tomorrow than they were today.

That may all sound cliche but they’re backing it up with actions.

On Friday night the team was down by one in the second period when Brendan Guhle and Alexander Nylander scored to put the Amerks up 2-1.

Enjoy Brendan Guhle in Rochester, this will likely be the only full season he plays here before his NHL career starts. After the game Chris Taylor said, “Guhle had an amazing night tonight. He was up in the play all night. His goal was unbelievable, NHL goal.”

Just over two minutes after that goal is when Alexander Nylander followed his own shot to bury the rebound.

Toronto scored two more to win the game but the Amerks were in it the whole time. The scoring chances were there but so were the saves. The Marlies had Calvin Pickard in net, he played 50 games in the NHL last season for the Colorado Avalanche.

“Tonight wasn’t the night for us to win a game but we’re getting better and better and better every day and that’s what I like about our team,” was another quote from Taylor after the game.

Justin Bailey returned to playing on Friday after missing 10 games with an ankle injury but appeared to injure the ankle again. He didn’t play on Saturday night.

The team hopped in the bus Saturday afternoon and took off down the thruway to play against the Utica Comets, a team that has been tough to play against through seven games.

The game was back and forth between both teams and 4:57 into the third period the Comets took a 2-0 lead.

The goaltending by Adam Wilcox was excellent keeping the score from increasing. Rochester wasn’t without chances while they were down. Sean Malone had a wide open net at one point and somehow a Comets defender got a leg in the way blocking the shot. Another moment in the game there was an Amerks shot heading into another open net when a Comets player somehow got the shaft of his stick in the way and deflected the puck.

The Comets players and fans were becoming confident in the game. This Amerks squad was confident as well that they weren’t out of the game.

As the Amerks headed to their sixth power play of the game I had written, “sixth time is the charm.” It was.

CJ Smith took the puck around the back of the net, spotted Sahir Gill going to the net and put the puck perfectly on his stick.

With just under three minutes left in the game CJ Smith lead the way again. He took the puck from the goal line, put it on net and Nick Baptiste buried the rebound.

This Amerks team doesn’t hang there heads, they don’t quit and they’re learning what it takes to win. I drove to Utica for the game and no matter how it ended it was worth the trip.

Kyle Criscuolo, Brendan Guhle and CJ Smith started the three on three overtime and it only took 17 seconds to finish the game. Guhle chipped the puck along the boards, Criscuolo spotted CJ Smith on the blue line and he won the game. Backhand, post, net.

The three point night has CJ Smith tied for third overall in the league in points at 30, 10G+20A. The goaltending by Adam Wilcox was his best game of the season.

Gameday: Ullmark vs Wilcox, Nylander, Percy and Team Motivation

The Amerks are heading into their 29th game of the season tonight at home against the Belleville Senators. Now that he team is past the first third of the season they’ve gained confidence, put expectations on themselves and are having no problems staying motivated.

The Amerks and Senators have played twice this season in early November. The Amerks won the first game 4-2 and the Senators won the second game in overtime 5-4.

Rochester is coming off of a come from behind overtime win vs Utica and a competitive loss against Toronto. Belleville is coming off of losses against Binghamton and Manitoba.

Belleville is 13 points behind Rochester in the standings but there’s one certain thing in The AHL, every team can be competitive.

Chris Taylor talked about the standings saying, “The standings don’t really matter where they’re at. We have to take every team like they’re the top team and come out and play the way we want to play.”

It’s repeated often by coaches and players that every game can be tough and it’s not an easy league. As confident as they are with themselves they go into every game knowing that it isn’t going to be easy.

Who is the starting goalie? That’s one of the first questions hockey fans (and reporters) have on game day. Linus Ullmark will get the start tonight for Rochester but even if it was Adam Wilcox it wouldn’t change the game at all.

Wilcox talked on Monday after practice about the relationship between goalies saying, “It’s important to have a good relationship because you’re having a healthy competition with them. You’re always backing them up whether I’m in a game and he needs to come in or vice versa so it’s a good to have a good relationship with him obviously. The guys on the team can tell if you don’t, it feeds off on them.”

Teams have been known to play different depending on who is in net whether you’re a professional hockey player or playing a youth game whether players admit it or not. Wilcox hinted at that with the last line. That isn’t the case here.

Ullmark and Wilcox were both drafted in the 6th round, only a year apart. Wilcox in 2011 by the Lightning, Ullmark in 2012 by the Sabres. Those are things we write about but don’t make a difference to the team on the ice. They’ve all bought into the idea of supporting each other and making each other better. That’s cliche to write about but actions speak for themselves and it’s seen at every practice and in every game with how everyone interacts.

Talking about the come from behind win in Utica this past Saturday night Chris Taylor said, “The guys wanted to win as much for him (Wilcox) as much as they wanted to win for themselves.”

“He’s a perfect guy,” Taylor said talking about the Ullmark/Wilcox duo. “They put internal pressure on each other. If one plays well, puts the pressure on the next guy to play well. We ask the same thing for our forwards and our defense. It’s the same as goaltending, we want them to put pressure one each other and make them accountable and make them better.”

It’s obvious that the season is going well when words are written about how well the goalies are getting along. That isn’t to say there’s been friction in years past between goalies but more about an inside look at the friendships of this current team.

With a third of the season already over the question becomes how do players stay motivated? How do you keep from falling into a slump and staying motivated?

Stuart Percy answered that saying, “It’s easier to come to work when it’s an upbeat environment. I think the holiday season helps brings that out on the ice as well.”

I also asked if we’re into the part of the season yet where it moves on from learning and on to higher goals. Percy answered saying, “We’re kind of into it now, we’re learning our structure well. We’re learning our teammates. I think when the calendar turns into January and late January it’s when our structure should be pretty solid and continuing to build on that. When you get into February and March that’s before playoff hockey so you have to be able to be organized to know the ins and outs of your teammates and what the coaches are trying to preach as well.”

Chris Taylor talked about keeping players motivated saying, “They’re motivation is that they should want to keep winning. To get even better every day as individuals and as a team and that’s what we’re trying to build off of. We don’t want to take any steps back.”

“It’s a little bit of a tribute to kind of our team and our culture we created here this season,” is what Hudson Fasching had to say about staying motivated. “It’s fun to be at the rink. That makes it easy to be able to come here and just hang out here with the guys whether we’re going through the same routine but we enjoy each others company. We all work hard and we all have fun which makes it easier for sure.”

****

Speaking of Hudson Fasching, with his return it’ll bump someone else out of the lineup. The depth is written about over and over. This team was built to be able to with stand any call ups and injuries and they already have. Depth also plays a role in forcing players to work hard, pressure each other and not expect anything.

“It’s not about competing against the other team, it’s internal competition. If you want ice team, you want to keep playing you have to play well,” is what Chris Taylor had to say about the lineup changes. “That’s pushing each other and helping each other but also making guys compete for their own jobs.”

Scratches tonight will be Eric Cornel, Dalton Smith, Adam Krause and Conor Allen.

Nathan Paetsch was in full practice this morning which is a great sign he’s even closer to a return. Justin Bailey (week to week) and Barry Goers (indefinite) are the other two injured players out.

****

As a first round draft pick Alexander Nylander is always a topic of conversation. When asked this week about how he’s been playing Taylor said, “He’s 19 years old, he’s feeling his way. It’s tough. It’s a tough league. If it was easy we wouldn’t be coaches and we wouldn’t have players down here.”

Taylor went on to say, “He’s doing a lot of good things and he’s improving every game. He’s getting back from injury. He’s been off for two months so there’s no question that he’s working hard to get back to where he wants to be and where we want him to be and continue to develop.”

A decision still hasn’t been made (or at least announced) about whether or not he’ll join Sweden at the World Junior Championships in Buffalo that start next week. The Sabres made a decision on December 20th last year but that was likely because the Amerks didn’t have any games after that. After tonight the team hits the road to play Friday and Saturday in Laval.

****

Had to chance to ask Percy about signing a contract and he said, “Just knowing I’ll get to spend the rest of the year here is great for me, I’ve really enjoyed my time so far here. I’ve done well on the ice and it’s been great off the ice as well.”

“I’ve been fortunate this year that the points have just kind of gone in I guess,” is what Percy said about being a leading scorer on the team. “When you’re passing to quality players it’s just a bonus.”

Chris Taylor talked about Percy saying, “We thought that his time was given up too quickly in Toronto. That’s why we grabbed him in Wilkes-Barre last year and why we grabbed him this year. We have the upmost respect him and his talent. He just needed to get confidence in his game and he got confidence in his game here and it’s great to see and well deserved for him to get a contract.”

When Percy was in the Toronto organization he also worked with assistant coach Gord Dineen bringing more familiarity to the situation here.

Amerks Win Again and are Tied in Points for First Place

The Amerks won on the road again and are now tied for first place in points in the division and second place overall in the league. An excellent way to head into the Christmas break.

To get technical for a quick moment, the AHL standings are based on points percentage so the Marlies are still in first with a game in hand but going off points alone they’re both at 44. Enjoy the moments as they happen.

The last time the Amerks had success like this was the 2009/2010 season and at should come as no surprise that Chris Taylor (as a player) and Randy Sexton (as a GM) were key parts to the that team just like this one.

Adam Wilcox earned his third straight win, the team won their fourth in a row and the team continues it’s incredible record as the only team in The AHL to only have one regulation loss on the road.

The game had a pretty well paced back and forth pace without a whistle until there was 8:42 left in the first period when Wilcox covered the puck. Rochester made a push with less than two minutes left generating about four quick shots.

Garret Ross snapped an eight game drought scoring the first goal of the game with 20 seconds left in the first period. Seth Griffith carried the puck around the back of the net and sent a cross ice pass from the top of the face off circle and Ross fired it past Michael McNiven. Ross snapped an eight game drought with that goal.

Laval controlled play in the second period leading 17-9 in shots and also scored a goal to tie it up 1-1. Chris Terry shot the puck towards the net and it went in after bouncing off of the back of Wilcox.

Dalton Smith had one scoring chance in the second and Kevin Porter doinked a shot off the post and that was about it for offensive pressure. Wilcox kept the Amerks in the game that period.

Through the first nine minutes of the third period the Amerks only had two shot on net when Stuart Percy shot the puck from the point and CJ Smith tipped it in to give the Amerks a 2-1 lead. Well, the original credit went to CJ Smith. And then they changed it to Sahir Gill. On the final score sheet Percy was given credit which turned out to be the game winner. The puck was tipped by Adam Cracknell of Laval. Took a few replays to figure that out!

Kevin Porter sealed the win with 5:12 left on the clock in the third period with a short handed snipe to put the Amerks ahead 3-1. Nick Baptiste got the puck out of the zone and Porter rushed after it without looking back.

Baptiste now has 16 points this season, 8 of those are against Laval.

Rochester continued to play their game until the buzzer and earned another win. The team has now won four straight games. They only have two regulation losses in their last 23 games. In 31 games played this season the team only has six total regulation losses!

Whatever the situation was with Steve Moses it didn’t impact the team this weekend. The team is strong, the bond is strong and they’re on the bus back to Rochester to enjoy three days off before playing Laval again at home on Wednesday night.

Amerks Gameday Notes: Tied for First on a Four Game Winning Streak

The Amerks are back on home ice tonight after three days off for Christmas break and are tied for first place in the North Division. Rochester is on a four game winning streak headed into the game tonight, a streak that includes two come from behind overtime wins.

Laval is the opponent again tonight, a team they defeated on the road this past weekend and will play again on Saturday night.

“This is the best part of the year. A lot of people have family coming in, they want to show the families how well they’re playing. We’re a team that’s committed to doing the right thing and everyday we’re getting better,” is what Chris Taylor said about keeping motivation going. “Everybody is motivated coming into the room each day. Everyone is a big family, they want to see each other and that’s what we’re trying to create and are creating and that’s why we’re doing well right now and will continued to do well.”

After three days off the challenge will be working off the rust. The team had a high paced game day skate that Chris Taylor applauded the guys for. Taylor said, “I thought we had a good jump this morning. The guys are excited to come to the rink and when you have that they’re excited to play. It’s fun winning, don’t ever lose that feeling and how we feel after each game and it’s great.”

Kevin Porter talked about Laval saying, “They work hard and we know we took four points in their building so they’re going to come out even harder in ours.” Porter also added on, “We were playing pretty well before the break and want to keep it going.”

A slow start after days off is expected but Kevin Porter said the way to try and avoid that is, “just coming prepared mentally and then getting a good warm up in.”

The last time the Amerks were in a position like this in the standings was the 2009/2010 season and things were a lot different that year. The intentions for success were there but the foundation wasn’t in place. Injuries and roster movements decimated the chemistry.

Comparing the month of December from then to now is two different stories.

Month of December before Christmas break: 2009/2010: 3-7-1 vs 2017/2018: 8-1-0-2

Month of December transactions before Christmas break: 2009/2010: 38 vs 2017/2018: 11*

The 2009/2010 team heading into the break had 10 regulation losses from the start of this season. This 2017/2018 team only has 6 regulation losses since the start of the season with 4 of those coming in the month of October.

That team lost in the first round of the playoffs for many reasons. The foundation for success and culture is a lot different this season.

****

In case you missed the news headed into the weekend, Steve Moses had been suspended by the team and took off oversea’s and signed with a KHL team. The story has been updated with a couple of quotes and more information. Read on..

****

Congrats to Linus Ullmark who was named CCM/AHL Player of the Week. Ullmark stopped 65 of the 68 shots he faced in two starts for the Americans last week, going 2-0-0 with a 1.46 goals-against average and a .956 save percentage. Of the three goals scored against him one was with only 60 seconds left on the clock.

Asked Chris Taylor about the award and he said, “Credit to everybody, that’s a team effort. Anybody that gets player of the week or any award that’s a whole team effort. Ullmark is thankful to the defense and forwards that do a great job in front of him and obviously he’s played really well, was recognized by the league which is great. That’s what our team is all about is right now.”

Ullmark is also tied for first in the league with 13 wins, leads the league in minutes played (1,243) and is first in the league with 623 saves.

Ullmark said, “This award is more for the people in front of me than it is for me.” Ullmark has described himself as just a guy out there who wants to cover up any mistakes his teammates might make.

“He just wants to win, wants to be a part of it. When the team does well, individuals will do well,” Chris Taylor said. “That’s the biggest thing about our team right now. We’re thinking about team first and it’s why we’re having a little bit of success.”

Ullmark will get the start in net tonight vs Laval.

****

CJ Smith has taken a stumble amongst the leagues best on a three game scoring drought. The use of the words tumble and drought aren’t serious. He has 10G+20A for 30 points and is only one point back of first amongst rookies in the league. He’s currently tied for sixth overall in the league.

****

The Amerks own three of the top 13 point-producing defensemen in the AHL in Zach Redmond, Stuart Percy and rookie Brendan Guhle, with Redmond and Percy accounting for half of the team’s top four point-getters. Redmond, who leads all Amerks defensemen with 21 points (7+14) through 23 games, is tied for fourth in goals by a defensemen with seven, one shy of matching his career-high of eight he set twice as a member of the St. John’s IceCaps. The veteran blueliner is also tied for third in points coming into the week. Guhle, meanwhile, ranks third in scoring among all AHL rookie defensemen with 17 points (6+11) while his six goals are second among first-year blueliners in the league.

****

No changes to the injury report. Nathan Paetsch (leg – week to week), Justin Bailey (ankle – week to week), Barry Goers (upper body – indefinite).

Conor Allen and Adam Krause are expected to be the healthy scratches.

****

I put an asterisks next to 11 in transactions at the top because it was really 14 but Stuart Percy being released and then signed is technically two transactions and Linus Ullmark coming back from practicing with Buffalo was another. Those moves didn’t change anything on the roster.

CJ Smith in a Scoring Slump; Amerks in a Slump at Home

$

Rochester joined the ranks of rough days for first place teams on Saturday losing 4-2 vs Laval Rocket. Manitoba and Providence also lost. The fourth team, Stockton Heat was fortunate to have the day off.

The good news is that the Amerks are still in first place. The bad news is that they aren’t doing too well at home. The team now has an 8-7-0-1 record at home vs 12-1-3-2 on the road. They are 9-3-0-1 in their last 13 games and defeated the team that was in first place to move into first. Those nine wins have also had nine different game winning goal scorers. Unfortunately those three regulation losses have all been at home. The record at home was a focus of post game interviews.

“If I knew we’d fix it,” Taylor said. “I don’t know what it is right now so we have to figure it out.”

Zach Redmond talked about it saying, “I think we’re aware of it and that’s the important thing. Still a ton of season to figure that part out. You want to win in front of your fans and I guess we’ll just have to put an extra emphasis on that.”

Stuart Percy said, “I’m not sure. I know we’re 8-7-1 now at home. We have to be better here. We keep it simple, we play to our strengths on the road and we just have to bring that mentality home. We took two games there right before Christmas. We know they were motivated. We have to play a full 60 minutes when it comes to playing on the road or at home.”

CJ Smith said, “We’re doing so well on the road we want to show the fans we are a first place team and are capable of winning games and we haven’t been able to close games out lately. Winning at home is just as important as winning on the road so I think we really have to bear down and get out to a better start.”

Speaking of CJ Smith, he’s been on a rookie slump. After shooting to the top of scoring leaders in the league he’s been without a point in the last six games. He’s still only one point behind the league leading rookie and tied for 10th overall in the league but his previous drought was only two games which were the third and fourth games of the season.

Asked about it after the game he said, “Slumps happen, it is what it is. Just have to work through it. Can’t get frustrated. All the best players in the world go through slumps so I think just sticking with it, stay positive and keep doing what I was doing earlier and not trying to change my game, not trying to force anything.”

“We have to stick with him and that’s the biggest point in giving him his confidence,” Chris Taylor said talking about CJ Smith. “He’s had a lot of good chances, he had four shots on net tonight. I thought he played ok like everybody but he just didn’t have that extra kick, extra jump. He’s usually first in the fore check and he’s slippery. He looked a little tired tonight and they didn’t. Again they’re a heavy team, they have big forwards, big defense and we’re not as big as them. We have to try and give a little extra and that takes a lot out of us.”

This is why players will stay in Rochester longer in the Jason Botterill era. It’s learning to score like he was but now learning how to get out of a slump, two things that are easier at this level than they are in the NHL.

It feels strange writing about slumps while the team is in first place. The expectations are high though, can’t sit back at this point.

Laval scored first at 10:24 of the first period when Chris Terry had the puck in the corner, spotted Adam Cracknell skating into the slot on his own, quick pass and it was past Wilcox.

At 10:40 of the second Jordan Boucher found the rebound off the initial save by Wilcox and buried it in an empty net.

“They have some skilled players and they find a way to get behind us and take advantage of just little mistakes we’ve been making, we just need to be a little cleaner,” was a comment by Zach Redmond after the game. Both goals were Rocket forwards finding their way to the net off of Amerks mistakes.

Seth Griffith had some patience on the far side, sent a saucer pass to Redmond on the opposite side, quick shot and it was a 2-1 game with 3:03 left in the second period.

The game started getting a little feisty in the third period which was bound to happen with this being the fourth game between these two teams in eight days.

Taylor talked about that saying, “I think it was just frustration on our part. Guys tried really hard tonight and I respect that. Our guys in our dressing room give everything they got every night. We just didn’t have it. Couldn’t connect on plays, attention to details, turnovers. We tried a little too hard, too much and we just didn’t have it tonight.”

“With the way that the league is setup when you’re playing teams 8 to 12 times especially so close together you’re going to start to get a little bad blood tonight between individuals,” is what Redmond had to say about it.

“We just went through our whole team just now and everybody we just said was alright, no one like stood out and no one was like really bad,” Taylor said after the game. “It was one of those games that was kind of blah and we didn’t get anything going.”

Chris Terry and Adam Cracknell were lethal for the Rocket. Terry had 1G+2A and Cracknell had 2G+1A on the same line together. Terry scored with 5:05 left in the third to go up 3-1.

Wilcox left the net for an extra attacker with 3:28 left in the game but it wasn’t meant to be. Laval scored an empty net goal with 2:40 left on the clock. This was the first time the Amerks had been down by more than two goals since a November 18th loss in Binghamton.

A penalty shot was awarded to CJ Smith with 1:23 left in regulation but he was stopped by Lindgren.

With 16 seconds left on the clock Sahir Gill scored off a pass from Brendan Guhle who was behind the net and the final score was 4-2.

Rochester had 38 shots on net but similar to the last time these two teams played a majority of them were just initial shots. CJ Smith talked about that saying, “Even though we got quite a few shots, we just have need to make it harder on their goalie. Take his eyes and get those second opportunities.”

“Sometimes it’s easier to play on the road. You just play, short shifts. Get home, get comfortable, want to extend, make the crowd get up. I don’t know what it is right now but we have to figure it out.” Chris Taylor finished with, “We have to be better at home. That’s the bottom line. We have to be better at home.”

Rochester has two days off to change the calendar before getting back to work on Tuesday morning.

The American Hockey League has announced that Linus Ullmark and CJ Smith will be representing the Rochester Americans at the 2018 AHL All-Star Classic at the end of the month in Utica, NY.

Linus UIlmark is headed to his second straight AHL All-Star game and is currently tied for first in the league with 15 wins. He has a 15-5-3 record this season with a road record of 7-0-3 and is third in the league with a .926 save percentage. A 2.33 GAA has him in fifth overall in the league.

CJ Smith is in his rookie season and is leads the Amerks with 20 assists, second on the team with 10 goals and leads the team with the combined 30 points. He’s tied for second among all AHL rookies.

“I was real excited,” CJ Smith said about finding out he’d been chosen. “First year in the league making the team is really exciting for me. I’m really excited to represent Rochester.”

Chris Taylor talked about the selections saying, “Talked to the team today and it’s a reflection of the whole team, two guys representing the whole team. It’s great and could have put anybody in there. Guhle as well, Criscuolo. A lot of guys that could have made the All-Star team Redmond, Percy, geez they’re all having great years.”

That’s why the Amerks are in the position in the standings they are, it’s been progress from many players, not just relying on a few.

“Those guys are representing our whole team and how well we’ve played so it’s great for those guys,” said Chris Taylor.

Linus Ullmark commented on being selected by saying, “Kind of shows how good we’ve been playing. I’ve been very fortunate to have a great team in front of me this year and helping me out tremendously. Not just me going there, couldn’t do it without the guys.”

When asked if some others should have been selected as well he said, “I would like to have all the guys at the all star game.”

Taylor himself was one win away from being selected as the coach of the North Division. Head coaches are selected based on the top team of each division at the end of the day on December 31st.

The 2018 AHL All-Star Challenge will then take place on the evening of Monday, Jan. 29 at 7:00 p.m. For the third straight year, instead of a traditional 60-minute game, the league’s all-stars will be divided into four teams, one representing each of the league’s divisions (Atlantic, North, Central, Pacific). The teams will then play a round-robin tournament featuring six games of 10 minutes each played entirely at 3-on-3. The two teams with the best records at the end of the round-robin tournament will face off for the championship, a six-minute game also played using the 3-on-3 format. Rosters for each team will be composed of 11 skaters and two goaltenders.

Tickets for the two-day 2018 AHL All-Star Classic presented by Turning Stone Resort Casino are priced at $39, $49, $69 and $89, and include admission to both the Skills Competition on Jan. 28 and the All-Star Challenge on Jan. 29. Tickets can be purchased either in person at the Adirondack Bank Center at the Utica Memorial Auditorium Box Office located at 400 Oriskany St. W in Utica, N.Y., online by visiting www.uticacomets.com or www.empirestatetix.com or by calling 1-315-790-9070.

Gameday Notes and Quotes vs Sound Tigers

The second place Amerks start the new year with back to back home games with the intent of turning their home record around. They play Friday night vs Bridgeport Sound Tigers and Saturday vs Lehigh Valley Phantoms.

This will be the second meeting between the Amerks and Sound Tigers, the first was December 10 in Bridgeport when the Amerks finished a three game weekend winning 4-1.

“We played a very simple game and that’s why we won,” is what Chris Taylor said this morning about that game. “Capitalized on their turnovers and have to do the same tonight.”

Playing on home ice hasn’t produced the best results for the Amerks this season and they’re aware of it. The finished the month of December with a 2-3-0-1 record compared to being 7-0-0-1 on the road.

Chris Taylor talked about last weekend when the team lost 2 of 3 saying, “The process is just how we respond the next day. We had a long week, was a tough week.”

“We did a lot of video, a lot of hard practicing so we know whats at stake this weekend especially especially with two weekends at home.”

Keeping it simple CJ Smith said, “We just have to get out to a good start.”

CJ Smith has been in a slump of sorts going six games without a point. Between that, still being a leading rookie scorer making the AHL All-Star team he said he isn’t feeling any pressure saying, “I’ve always had pretty high expectations of myself, trying to challenge myself so I don’t think there’s too much pressure building.”

While talking about recent slumps and the home record it’s also worth noting that the Amerks have earned points in 21 of the last 25 games and the team has 38 points going back to November 1st.

The last nine games were all against division teams including four of the last five against Laval. Every player knows that’s how the scheduling works out in the AHL so when a different opponent you don’t normally play comes along it’s a positive.

“We weren’t happy with our last few games so a little bit of a restart for us,” Hudson Fasching said.

On what they need to do Fasching said, “For us it’s more about creating scoring chances. I think we did create a lot but we didn’t capitalize. We need to move for with those scoring chances, get a greasy goal, something that isn’t necessarily a tic tac toe play.”

“We haven’t gotten the results that we wanted to at home so far so we have to make sure we have a good weekend, we know that.”

Starting goalies are expected to be Linus Ullmark and Kristers Gudlevskis.

Taylor Fedun was sent back to Rochester from the Sabres this morning and will be playing. Conor Allen and Nathan Paetsch will be the healthy scratches on defense.

****

The injury report has three players on it: Justin Bailey (upper body / day to day), Barry Goers (upper body / indefinite) and Andrew MacWilliam (upper body / week to week).

Bailey is back to skating with the team.

MacWilliam blocked a shot off of his wrist last weekend against Toronto.

Amerks Reach 50 points with Win over the Phantoms

The Rochester Americans defeated the Lehigh Valley Phantoms on Saturday night at home to reach 50 points in the standings and the third team to do that in the league. The 3-1 win caps off a weekend of back to back home games when the team knew they had to win. The Amerks are on pace for 105 points, the last time they broke that barrier was the 2004/2005 season. That was also the last time they made it past the first round of the playoffs.

For anyone who may not pay close attention to the league standings, the Phantoms have been a top team in the Atlantic all season. After the game Chris Taylor said, “They’re a good team but again we measure ourselves against ourselves.”

“I didn’t really like our first period, thought we were a little sloppy but we responded in the second and third and played the way we wanted to play.”

Through 36 games this season the Amerks only have eight regulation losses with seven of those being at home. Two of those last week.

Seth Griffith talked about that after the win saying, “We haven’t play that great at home, especially yesterday, gave up one early. We bounced back today and showed that we’re a team that can play on the road and play at home. I think we proved it to ourselves when we played in Toronto and they’re a tough team and we’ve just kind of been moving forward from that every day.”

Taylor still thinks the Amerks can be a lot better at home saying, “We’re getting there. I would still like us to even be a little better. I think we have a lot more in our locker room. I have a lot of trust in our guys and I feel that we’re a really good hockey team and we can play a lot better at home still.”

Griffith had a three point net (1G+2A) and was the first star of the game.

Kevin Porter talked about Griffith after the game, “He’s easy to play with, controls the game. Makes it a lot simpler for me and Gill and the rest of the guys.”

Just like Friday night when Chris Taylor talked about wanting Brendan Guhle to use his strengths more he said the same about Griffith tonight. Taylor said Griffith came down with a great attitude and added, “We just wish sometimes we wish he’d like to shoot a little more because he has a lot of opportunity’s that he could shoot and we’ll get him there.”

Linus Ullmark and Dustin Tokarski battled it out throughout the game with quality saves at both ends of the ice. The difference was the Amerks defense breaking up odd man rushes by the Phantoms versus the Amerks able to connect and score.

“He’s an all star for a reason. One of the best goalies I’ve seen in this league,” was what Seth Griffith had to say about the play of Ullmark. “He keeps us in the game every night, we have an opportunity to win every night when he’s in the net and the same with Wilcox too.”

The Amerks have been perfect on the penalty kill and extended the streak to 37 straight kills tonight. Ullmark has been a big part of that and Chris Taylor gave him credit saying, “He needed to be our best penalty killer and he was.”

CJ Smith ended his seven game rookie slump without a point scoring the first goal of the game off a pass from Kyle Criscuolo.

Former Amerks defenseman TJ Brennan is always lethal with the puck and he tied the game five minutes later while playing four on four hockey.

Kevin Porter scored what would end up being the game winner on a two on one with Seth Griffith and blasting the puck into the back of the net.

In a designed play, Kevin Porter connected on a 27 yard scoring drive to put the Amerks up 3-1 with 1:27 left in the game to solidify the win.

Griffith credited the team buy in for the win saying, “We just stuck to our system. Everyone believes in the system and when we stick to it everyone’s going to get an opportunity on the rush.”

“It’s going to be a tough road the rest of the the year,” Kevin Porter said after the game. “These are going to playoff like games for the rest of the year and hopefully we battle like we did tonight.”

The Amerks hit the road for a game in Belleville on Wednesday, return home against Binghamton on Friday and travel to Syracuse next Saturday.

Alexander Nylander will be back with the team after the weekend after playing for Sweden in the World Juniors.

Nathan Paetsch has been cleared to play but is still a week away and could play next weekend.

Justin Bailey hasn’t been cleared yet but the hope is that he’ll be ready in the next week and a half.

Comets Defeat the Amerks Again

The Utica Comets defeated the Rochester Americans again. The good news is that the two teams only play one more time in the regular season and hopefully that’s it. The Comets have had the Amerks number all season and won again on Wednesday night in the second straight shootout. The season series is now 6-1-1-1 in favor of the comets with six of those nine games going into extra time.

Kevin Porter scored at 8:43 of the first on the power play to give the Amerks a 1-0 lead and it was the only lead they’d have the whole game. Porter redirected a perfect pass from Seth Griffith into the net past Thatcher Demko.

The Amerks controlled the pace of the game through the first 15 minutes of the first period until Darren Archibald tied the game up with 4:07 left in the first. Cole Cassels saw Archibald all alone to his left who was able to pick his shot from the middle of the face off circle.

Cole Cassels gave the Comets a 2-1 lead at 3:01 of the second skating right into the slot and receiving a pass from Michael Carcone who put on a slick spin o rama move on Eric Knodel. All eyes were on Carcone and Cassels just skated right on in.

The last five minutes of the second period was showing signs of the momentum working back into the Amerks favor but they still weren’t able to score on Demko.

CJ Smith tied the game up 2-2 at 7:11 of the third period on a breakaway. Eric Cornel was able to spot CJ Smith breaking out, hit him with a pass and Smith and he was able to deke Demko out of position and score the goal.

In the shootout it went to four shooters with only Kevin Porter scoring for the Amerks. Reid Boucher scored on the Comets third try and Nikolay Goldobin scored on the fourth to win it.

The other Amerks shooters were Sahir Gill, Seth Griffith and CJ Smith.

Linus Ullmark had 35 saves and was the third star of the game. On paper it’s his third loss but can’t hold any of the losses against him when scoring in the other direction is an issue.

It’s the second straight shootout loss and the third loss in less than a week for the Amerks. The good news is that they’re still in second place. The bad news is that they aren’t playing hockey like they had been. Its also possible that teams chasing them have them figured out. Whatever it is the team heads to Charlotte for two games this weekend with the opportunity to turn it around.

A Great Weekend in Charlotte for the Amerks

The Amerks spent the weekend in Charlotte for back to back games and came out on top with three of four points, scored eight goals, a commanding 4-1 win and pushed a game to overtime after being down three goals. That’s a great weekend on the road.

The Amerks have earned points in four straight games and still have not gone back to back games without a point since October. The three point weekend keeps the team in second place in the division, second in the conference and third overall in the league.

(Featured photo by Charlotte Checkers)

Adam Wilcox earned the win on Saturday with a 23 save performance. Linus Ullmark played on Sunday and had 23 saves in the loss. Ullmark has one regulation loss, two shootout losses and an overtime loss since returning from Buffalo.

On Saturday evening the Amerks controlled the pace of the entire game and it showed on the scoreboard.

Eric Cornel scored first after going 16 games without a goal. He created a turnover and buried a quick shot to the back of the net. Kyle Criscuolo used his quick speed to score a wrap around goal and the Amerks held a 2-0 lead heading out of the first period. Criscuolo appeared to score another goal in the second but after a replay the refs said no goal.

Sean Malone ended his 23 game goal drought with his first of the weekend with less than five minutes left in the second period by redirecting a pass from a CJ Smith.

Lucas Wallmark scored the only goal for the Checkers with 2:01 left in the second period.

CJ Smith scored an empty net goal with 1:47 left in the game and finished with 1G+2A. The three point night put him back into second place for rookie scoring with 14G+23A. He’s three points behind Dylan Strome.

Adam Wilcox was stellar in net again making 23 saves and earned the second star of the game, CJ Smith was number one star. The Checkers had a number of quality scoring chances but Wilcox was excellent again tracking the puck on every shot.

On Sunday afternoon it was slightly different at the start but one of many things we’ve learned about this team through 43 games is that they don’t ever quit.

Charlotte scored a breakaway goal 49 seconds into the game to take an early 1-0 lead.

Sean Malone scored for the second time in two games at 5:35 of the first period. Justin Bailey put the initial shot on net with a back hand and Malone powered his way to the front to bury the rebound.

Charlotte took a 2-1 lead from a snipe in the slot by Trevor Carrick. The shot was in the net before Ullmark had a chance to get set.

Valentin Zykov makes goal scoring look easy and scored his first of the net at 1:16 in the second period by skating around Zach Redmond and pulling Ullmark out of position. The Checkers were up 3-1 at that point.

Warren Foegele put the Checkers up 4-1 by finding a loose puck in the crease and they started thinking the game was in their hands.

With 6:18 left in the second period Seth Griffith had the puck at the top of the face off circle, found a spot and put the Amerks within two goals. Also known as the worst lead in hockey.

Linus Ullmark made a great sequence of saves late in the third period to keep the Amerks in the game.

Hudson Fasching won a battle for the puck in the Checkers end, created the turnover and a perfect pass to Captain Kevin Porter to make it a 4-3 game with 4:29 left in the third.

In a similar play, Hudson Fasching battled behind the net, spotted Porter out front and he scored again 2:01 left in the game to tie it up 4-4.

Checkers Coach Mike Vellucci after the game talked about the third period saying, “They were very aggressive. They’ve got a lot of older guys. I don’t want to say we panicked, but under pressure we didn’t pay a price to get pucks out. We were taking the easy way out and you’ve got to make sure you play hard, especially in those situations.” [ Checkers Recap ]

With 25 seconds left in the third period Stuart Percy had a chance to go ahead 5-4 but doinked it off of the post.

Seth Griffith went down the ice with Kyle Criscuolo in overtime in a two on one but Criscuolo was stopped by Checkers goalie Alex Nedeljkovic.

After the save the play went back down the ice and Valentin Zykov scored again and the game winner in overtime and just made CJ Smith and Linus Ullmark look like silly. Kykov is tied for the league lead with 21 goals.

Watch video highlights of the games: [ Saturday 4-1 Win ] and [ Sunday 5-4 OT Loss ]

The Amerks will be back home this week to practice before hitting the road next weekend to play Toronto on Friday night and then Belleville on Saturday.
