Redmond Scores Twice in Amerks Win

$

The first period started off slow again for Rochester but at least it lasted less than four minutes, not the full 20. They team bounced back after being down early in the first and finished the game with a pretty solid 4-1 win.

The penalty kill was perfect with a short handed goal from Kevin Porter and also stopped Hershey on three chances. The power play came up short for the third straight game and 16th power play chance in a row. That isn’t as much of an issue when you’re winning by scoring five on five goals.

Zach Redmond scored twice, including the game winner, and tied Victor Olofsson for the league lead in points. At this pace we’ll see a 50 goal season from Zach Redmond. The Amerks all time record for goals by a defenseman in a season is 18 by Rick Pagnutti in 1972-73.

Adam Wilcox earned the win and is now 3-0-1 this season. It wasn’t an easy game for him, he had to bail the defense out often, mostly from Brendan Guhle turnovers.

Why couldn’t they have played this way last night and won on home ice? Hopefully it was a lesson learned because they responded tonight and earned two points in the standings. Rochester now has 17 points out of a possible 20 in the last 10 games.

After starting the season looking like an improved hockey player we’re back to wondering about Alex Nylander. He was benched in the third period on Friday night and was back to coasting again tonight. He didn’t have a shot on goal tonight.

Here’s a recap of the scoring in the game:

Derek Hulak put Hershey up 1-0 at 3:35 of the first period redirecting a shot from the point by Connor Hobbs.

That seemed to wake the team up because after that goal was scored the Amerks took control of the game.

Zack Redmond scored an unassisted goal with 61 seconds left in the first period after creating a turnover along the boards. He took the puck, went below the goal line and snuck it past Samsanov.

Rochester finished the first period with a 15-7 advantage in shots and it was clear that they were in control of the game at this point.

The second period continued where the first period left off controlling the pace of play.

Zach Redmond scored again for his eighth of the season with assists from Wayne Simpson and Lawrence Pilut. Simpson sent the puck from the goal line and Redmond unleashed his rocket of a shot from the point.

Kevin Porter scored a short handed goal at 16:24 of the second period for his third goal of the season. CJ Smith took the initial shot, the rebound went to the side of the net where Porter was in position to put it in the net.

Dalton Smith is another player that has improved from last season and over the last few games has been all over the ice hitting bodies and creating scoring chances. It paid off at 7:19 of the third period when he scored his first goal of the season. Assists to Will Borgen and Eric Cornel.

Danny O’Regan was awarded a penalty shot with 1:12 remaining in regulation but was stopped by Samsonov.

Rochester will head home from Hershey and prepare for a big game in Buffalo on Wednesday vs Cleveland. It’s still early in the season but so far it’s Rochester and Cleveland at the top of the North Division standings. This could be an early preview of the top of the division.

Team Effort Leads Amerks to a Dominating Win

The Rochester Americans played one of their best team games in a dominating 5-2 win on Thursday night in Buffalo in a battle for first place. Heading into the night the Cleveland Monsters were two points behind the Amerks in the standings making it a four point game. The Amerks now have a four point lead on Cleveland and an eight point lead over fourth place Laval.

After the game Sean Malone said, “It was a battle for first place and I think we handled it really well. Good teams tend to come up big in these situations and I was just happy with the way we played tonight.”

One of the many things that is behind the early season success of this team is the ability to roll four successful lines. It’s important to look at the details, not just the goals, assists and point totals.

“I think that’s what we’re capable of doing, that can be our identity,” Wayne Simpson said after the game. “I think it was our best performance of the season.”

“It was a great win,” Chris Taylor said post game. “One of our best 60 minute games we played this year. I really liked every part of it, our goaltender, our defense and our forwards.”

Through the majority of the first period it was a back and forth game with the Amerks leading the play until Cleveland fired a number of shots on a power play opportunity.

Sean Malone had a hand in his first game back that setup the rush for Justin Bailey to score his first goal of the season. Malone won the face off to the right of Scott Wedgewood in the Amerks zone, Taylor Fedun sent a 30 yard pass to Justin Bailey who was leaving the zone and he took off down the ice and fired a shot over the left shoulder of Jean-Francois Berube.

Zach Redmond scored his team leading 8th goal of the season just 67 seconds later and four other players deserved assists on the play. Alex Nylander has been known to carry the puck into the zone, dump it into the corner and see where things unfold from there. This time he took a look around, pinched the puck against the boards and waited for reinforcements to arrive. Andrew Oglevie quickly entered the play and helped free the puck to where Eric Cornel battled for possession. The puck was sent up the side boards where Dalton Smith was able to tip it into open ice where Zach Redmond was waiting to fire a shot. Credit back to Cornel who was in front of the net and setup a screen. Those little details are what has this Amerks team showing a lot of potential.

Justin Bailey used his speed again for his second goal of the night and second of the season. The play started when Malone won the face off and tied his player up. That allowed Justin Bailey to get into the play when the puck was sent deep into the Amerks zone. Andrew MacWilliam sent the puck up the boards, Nylander chipped it into the neutral zone and Bailey took off down the ice.

Take the good with the bad. Cleveland scored their first goal of the game 23 seconds later when Nylander turned the puck over behind the goal line in the Amerks zone to Sonny Milano. Nathan Gerbe took a shot, the rebound went to Milano who shot the puck at the back end of Wedgewood and the puck went in the net.

“Let’s be honest, Alex didn’t make a play on the one goal,” Chris Taylor said post game when talking about mistakes that can be made. “We put him right back out there and he makes a good play. That’s learning and what we need to get out of these guys.”

Rochester took a 4-1 lead off a goal from Wayne Simpson for his first of two goals in the game. Zach Redmond passed the puck up ice to Simpson who tipped it into the Monsters zone. Both Simpson and CJ Smith chased the puck down behind the goal line. CJ Smith carried the puck around the puck of the net, sent a pass to Simpson across the goal mouth for a one timer. Redmond didn’t get a point on the play but the speed at which he sent the puck out of the defensive zone helped setup the scoring play.

Wayne Simpson scored again just over two minutes later with a quick shot from the face off circle and found a spot on the far side top corner of the net. Taylor Fedun and Lawrence Pilut showed patience with the puck in the defensive zone waiting for the forwards to get into position and as they did Pilut cleared the puck up to Simpson who took off. Eric Cornel had credit for an assist on the score sheet but wasn’t on the ice.

“He just does everything well. He’s sneaky good. He kind of flies under the radar a little and then wow, he has a breakaway or he has a great shot,” Chris Taylor said when talking about Simpson. “He’s a proven goal scorer in this league so it’s not like we got him out of nowhere.”

Former Sabres forward Nathan Gerbe scored with 32 seconds left off of an odd redirect off Kevin Porters stick. Gerbe was attempting to put the puck on net to a teammate crashing the net and instead it went off the blade of Porters stick.

Victor Olofsson didn’t play in the third period for what Chris Taylor described as a night to day related to lower body. There wasn’t anything noticeable in the second period that would’ve indicated a concern.

Scott Wedgewood earned his sixth win of the season with a 24 save performance. Take away the turnover that resulted in the goal off his back and the bounce off Porters stick and he has a shutout. He made quality saves at other important points of the game.

It was one of those games where everyone contributed in some way and the team was rewarded with a win. They held the league leading goal scorer Zac Dalpe off the scoreboard much like they did with Reid Boucher with Utica a couple of weeks ago.

“I can put any line out there at any time, that’s what I want to do, I want to play all four lines as much as I can and that’s what we’ve been doing lately.”

Rochester only has one game this weekend when they play at home, in Rochester, on Friday night against Syracuse at 7:05pm.

Here’s clips of the scoring:

Embarrassed in Springfield

0

That was an embarrassing night in Springfield for the Rochester Americans. There’s no other way to say it. There was 20 minutes of the game on Friday night where it appeared as though it was going to be a competitive hockey game and then the second period arrived.

Scott Wedgewood got the start in net for Rochester but after four goals against was replaced by Adam Wilcox. Victor Olofsson was out for his second straight game and Kyle Criscuolo has now missed six straight. Both are considered lower body and day to day. Healthy scratches were Nathan Paetsch, Tyler Randell, Jack Dougherty, and Brandon Hickey.

The first period looked decent on both sides of the ice.

Kevin Porter opened the scoring at 7:03 of the first period with a goal from the hash marks of the face-off circle from a great lead pass by Lawrence Pilut. That was Porters fourth goal of the season and 16th assist of the season for Pilut.

Springfield tied the game at 15:46 of the first when Dryden Hunt scored after taking off out of the penalty box with a pass from Henrik Borgstrom and out skating Brendan Guhle down ice. Cover the guy coming out of the box and the period ends with a 1-0 lead.

The initial draft of this recap after the first period started off by talking about how the Amerks controlled the pace of play for the first 20 minutes of the game and things were looking alright after a week off.

Springfield changed everything in the second period. They scored four goals within a two minute and 24 second span early in the period. They scored a total of five goals in the first 5:29 of the period to take a 5-1 lead. Dryden Hunt completed a hat trick at 12:47 of the second and Paul Thompson scored his second of the game for an 8-1 lead at 12:47 of the period.

CJ Smith scored his sixth of the season and power play goals by Zach Redmond and Alex Nylander gave the Amerks four goals on the night. A team scoring four goals including two on the power play can often be enough to win a game. Unless you give up nine to the opponent.

Jacob MacDonald scored that ninth goal of the night for Springfield at 13:19 of the third and the game was over.

Adam Wilcox lost his first game in regulation after allowing five goals against. This was also the first regulation road loss of the season for Rochester.

So, what happened? After painfully watching the second period over again it was a tale of two different teams. Springfield came out flying and the Amerks were scrambling. A combination of goaltending and defensive play by forwards and defenseman. Out of 18 skaters the only two that weren’t on the ice for a goal against were Danny O’Regan and Andrew Oglevie.

Springfield appears to be a pretty good hockey team early in the season. Every team will lose games here and there but very few will be embarrassed in a period like Rochester was on Friday night. Credit to Springfield for what they accomplished.

The Amerks play again Saturday night in Providence and Sunday afternoon in Hartford. Two wins can salvage the weekend but the second period is going to linger for a while.

Here’s all 13 in order goals as posted on Twitter in order. It’d be a waste of words to type out a recap of each one.

Recap of the Last Five (Games 11-15)

Welcome to the third part of a 15 part season series highlighting the last five games (the last segment will be six games) showing off the stats, standings, highlights, transactions and whatever else took place prior to the next five games. The goal is to post these the day of the next game of a five game set. A little different than a weekly format to give us a better snapshot of trends as the season goes.

The team finished the last five games with a record of 3-2-0-0 and are heading into the game tonight looking to forget the embarrassing loss on Friday night.

Two regulation wins, an overtime win and two losses as a result of being outplayed is the simple way to summarize the last five.

After the first 10 games of the season the leagues top five leaders in points were dominated by Olofsson, Redmond and Pilut. Everything can quickly change in the American League and Olofsson has dropped to 17th in the league after missing two games. Redmond and Pilut are still top 10 in the league and you’ll notice two other former Amerks in that list as well, Phil Varone and TJ Brennan.

Zach Redmond continues to be on pace to break the all-time single season Amerks record for goals by a defenseman and will likely occur before 2018 is over. The record is 18 goals and he has 11 goals in 15 games.

More than Just Points

The two losses in the last five game span is a result of poor periods of hockey. The team didn’t show up in the first period against Hershey and then last night against Springfield they had an embarrassing second period that cost them the game. It doesn’t matter who you play in the American League, any game can be won by any team in any 20 minute span.

Sean Malone returned to the lineup after missing the first 12 games with an injury and he had an immediate impact. Winning face-offs, winning puck battles and playing a solid two-way game. His return was immediately felt and helped with Kyle Criscuolo and Victor Olofsson out of the lineup due to injury.

Speaking of injuries, Kyle Criscuolo has missed six straight games with a lower body injury. He blocked a shot on October 26th, left the game and hasn’t played since. He’s the only player that didn’t make the trip this weekend. He had returned to skating with the team earlier in the week before leaving a practice early. Victor Olofsson has missed two straight games with a lower body injury. He hasn’t skated with the team but has been skating with the training staff. He had missed the third period on November 7th with no apparent signs of injury. Both players are considered day to day.

Scott Wedgewood was signed on the first day of free agency by the Buffalo Sabres to be the number three goalie in the organization and 15 games into the season there’s still questions about whether or not he’s the one. He’s been reliable in net for Rochester but games like the one on Friday night bring more questions than answers. He’s winning games but isn’t stealing games. Is it fair to question the goalie when the team struggles to play defensively in front of him?

Where is Brendan Guhle? Through 13 games he has 8 points (2G+6A) but he isn’t the same fast skating offensive defenseman that we saw last season. He isn’t flying down the ice creating scoring chances and also getting back to the defensive zone to stop other teams. He seems to be stuck in limbo as the odd defenseman. Redmond and Pilut are playing the most minutes and used in all areas of the game. MacWilliam and Borgen are the defensive defenseman relied on for penalty kills. That leaves Guhle and whoever he is paired up with to make up other areas of the game.

Rasmus Asplund only has one point this season but there’s a lot more that he brings to the game. To read more about him read a feature I wrote up after talking to him and the coaches – One Point isn’t Good Enough but Asplund is Still Playing Great Hockey

Goals and Shots

It’s pretty simple, score more than the other team and win. Goal scoring was even in the last five games with 18 for and 18 against. Besides the second period of game 15 versus Springfield the Amerks had only allowed one goal against in the 2nd period over the span of four games.

The team is getting more shots off against opponents but that doesn’t always equal a win as shown in games 11 and 15. The trend continues to be shooting more pucks which is resulting in more goals. This will be a topic to come back to halfway through the season.

Special Teams

Power play is currently 7th in the league at 23.8% (Previously 2nd in the league at 29.5%)

Penalty kill is currently 22nd in the league at 77.8% (Previously 26th in the league at 75%)

After starting the season with one of the most lethal power plays in the league the team went into a rut. Zach Redmond scored in game 15 vs Springfield after the team was held scoreless in 24 straight attempts.

PP and PK in games 11-15 by period:

Standings

Heading into the 16th game of the season the Amerks continue to stay in first place in the North Division with almost every team having played 15 games. Syracuse still has two games in hand and is on a 5-0-1-0 streak. Déjà vu of last season after the Crunch started slow and then started to find their way and based on winning percentage they’re in second place.

The top two teams overall Eastern Conference standings have stayed the same since the last five recap with Charlotte ahead of Rochester. The season started with two losses against Charlotte and then a big loss against Springfield last night raises a question on whether or not the North is that strong versus top teams in the Atlantic. Every team loses at some point, we’ll see how the Amerks respond.

Highlight Goal

Two goals from the same game.

Zach Redmond with the overtime game winner versus Syracuse.

And I’ll also include the first pro goal in the same game for Andrew Oglevie after Alex Nylander went crashing into Crunch goalie Eddie Pasquale.

Bailey Scores Twice, But Amerks Fall in Overtime to Bruins

This weekend hasn’t gone as planned for the Rochester Americans. A regulation loss on Friday that no one will want to remember followed by giving up a two goal and losing in overtime on Saturday. They’ll have a chance to salvage the weekend with three out of a possible six points against Hartford.

I was out of town and unable to watch the game so the recap below is courtesy of the Rochester Americans.

Here’s the two goals scored by Justin Bailey and the overtime winner for Providence.

****

(Providence, RI) … Justin Bailey scored twice in less than seven minutes to give the Rochester Americans (10-4-2-0) a 2-0 lead at the halfway point, but the Providence Bruins (6-8-2-0) responded with three straight unanswered goals, including the game-winner from Ryan Donato just 1:09 into overtime, to come away with a 3-2 win Saturday at Dunkin’ Donuts Center. The setback keeps the Amerks winless through the first two games of their weekend trek through the Atlantic Division which wraps tomorrow afternoon in Hartford against the Wolf Pack.

Despite seeing their second loss of the weekend, the Amerks remain atop the AHL’s North Division standings with 22 points through 16 games this season.

Bailey (2+0) scored both goals for Rochester, his fourth and fifth of the season, marking his second two-goal outing in the last four games. Bailey, who had just three points through his first 11 games of the season, now shows five goals in his last four appearances.Brendan Guhle (0+1), C.J. Smith (0+1), Sean Malone (0+1) and Lawrence Pilut (0+1) all notched assists. Pilut’s helper nudged him past fellow blueliner Zach Redmond for the team’s overall scoring lead while also making him the AHL’s top scoring defenseman with 20 points (2+18) through 14 games this season. He also leads the AHL with 18 assists.Scott Wedgewood made 27 saves on the night in what was his ninth start in the last 11 games.

In addition to providing the game-winner, Donato also notched an assist for a two-point night (1+1), while Jordan Szwarz (1+0) and Cameron Hughes (1+0) rounded out scoring for the Bruins. Zane McIntyre made 27 stops between the pipes for Providence, which has claimed five of its six wins this season on home ice.

Following a scoreless first period, the Amerks drew first blood 5:20 into the second period, when Smith brought the puck down the ice on the left wing side and made a drop-pass to Bailey. Streaking down the middle of the ice, Bailey fired it in, marking the fourth straight game that the Amerks scored first.

Later in the sandwich stanza, Malone carried the puck from behind the net, and brought it to the right wing, where he fired to off to Pilut. From the blueline, Pilut shot the puck through traffic, and a net-front Bailey tipped it in for his fifth goal in the last four games.

Less than a minute after the Amerks second goal, Brendan Guhle went to the penalty box, followed shortly after by the Bruins’ Joel Messner and Rochester’s Jack Dougherty, who returned from a 10-game injury absence, giving Providence a 4-3 man-advantage. Donato came down the right wing and passed to Szwarz, who took Wedgewood down with him as he snuck the puck into the back of the net with 5:28 remaining in the second to cut the Amerks lead in half.

Just under two and a half minutes into the final period, Peter Cehlarik brought the puck down the ice, alongside Karson Kuhlman and Hughes. Cehlarik lunged to the net, but passed the puck to Hughes, who notched his sixth goal of the season which tied the game at two apiece.

The score remained knotted at two through the end of regulation and into overtime. Just over one minute into the extra period, Donato took the puck up the left wing side, looking as if he was going to skate it behind the net. Donato, however, pulled it back towards himself and tucked it under the crossbar, giving the Bruins the 3-2 victory.

Rochester puts the finishing touches on its first three-in-three of the season Sunday afternoon at XL Center against the Hartford Wolf Pack in the final stop of a three-game trek through the Atlantic Division. The 3:00 p.m. matinee will be carried live on The Sports Leader AM 950/ 95.7 FM ESPN Rochester and can be viewed on AHLTV.

Another Concerning Loss for the Amerks

$
0

Turnovers, off-sides, penalties, good shifts, bad shifts, bad bounces, goaltending – take your pick as to why the Rochester Americans lost on Friday night. Everything on paper should have indicated a Rochester Americans win against the Utica Comets but they made sure to do just about everything wrong and Utica was able to take advantage of it.

“Our team should never give up five goals and it’s concerning from last weekend to this weekend,” Chris Taylor said after the game. “We’re better than that and especially at home. The team that we had tonight I thought should have had five or six and gave up one or two maybe.”

Lawrence Pilut was assigned back to the Amerks following the Buffalo Sabres game on Friday evening. He made it back to Rochester in time to board the team bus to Binghamton for the game on Saturday night. The defenseman may have been a difference maker on Friday night but playing without him shouldn’t have been the reason they lost.

“He definitely makes a difference, he makes our team better and I’m not going to say he doesn’t,” Chris Taylor said following the loss. “We have guys and our depth and we should’ve been fine tonight. They’re going through a lot of injuries and a lot of call ups (Utica Comets). For me this is a very disappointing game, worst of the season.”

This statement follows last Fridays game when they were scored on seven times in the second period and lost 9-4.

Wayne Simpson and Danny O’Regan scored four minutes apart in the first period to give the Amerks a 2-1 lead but it wouldn’t last for long. An interference penalty served by Dalton Smith, Brendan Guhle is the one who committed the penalty, and then a slash by Jack Dougherty gave Utica a 5 on 3 advantage.

Zack MacEwen and Michael Carcone made use of the power play time and scored 26 seconds apart to give Utica a 3-2 lead.

There were 11 minor penalties called in the game. Six against Utica, five against Rochester. “You can blame the refs all you want but once they start early with the soft calls and how they’re going to call it all night you have to adapt and learn,” CJ Smith said. “We didn’t adapt, took too many penalties and it hurt us tonight.”

Jack Dougherty lobbed a puck on net from the blue line and it found its way past Richard Bachman to tie the game at three halfway through the second period.

Utica scored with 5.6 seconds remaining in the second period to take a 4-3 lead with a short handed goal. A misplayed face off in the Comets zone resulted in the puck heading the wrong direction and Michael Carcone scored his second goal of the game.

The real difference maker was at 2:44 early in the third period when Brendan Guhle made an attempt at a cross ice pass but it went off the tip of his stick and landed right in the slot to Cam Darcy who gave Utica the 5-3 lead.

Chris Taylor said, “The turnover on the last goal really hurt. The whole game really hurt and how we let them back in the game. Sometimes our forwards were good, sometimes they were bad. Our defense was good, and they were bad. Our goalie was good, and then bad. It was a total team effort and a total team loss.”

Sean Malone scored his first goal of the season just over four minutes later to give the Amerks some hope but it wouldn’t be enough. They pulled Adam Wilcox for an extra attacker with 2:26 left in the period. They had more shots, more pressure, and more chances but ultimately couldn’t score.

After the game CJ Smith said, “We put up almost 50 shots (final tally was 47), scored four goals, should be able to find a way to win that kind of game. Maybe we got some bad bounces defensively, unlucky defensively but you have to work hard to make sure those bounces don’t go in.”

Victor Olofsson and Brendan Guhle had a team high six shots each in the game, none were memorable. The defense alone had a total of 23 of the combined 47 shots with only Dougherty finding the net.

In the post game interview Wayne Simpson said, “We just had these little stretches that weren’t good and it kind of let them get in the game. It’s disappointing to not put together a full effort. It was an important divisional game, we fought back hard, tried to even it up late but it just wasn’t good enough.”

The team doesn’t see themselves in a slide even after losing three out of four games. “Just little things that aren’t going our way and I think they’re fixable,” Wayne Simpson said.  “We can fix them fast. We have a good group and we’re not going to lose our confidence that quick.”

“We just have to bear down and try to play smarter hockey tomorrow night and from now on.”

They play Binghamton on Saturday night and left on a bus immediately following the loss on Friday night.

Rochester has enjoyed sitting in first place in the North Division but it may not be for long at this pace. Syracuse is on an 8-0-1-0 run right now and is only three points behind the Amerks in the standings with two games in hand.

We’ve seen what this team is capable of so there’s no reason to panic. Yet. But there’s reasons to be concerned. They’re trending in the wrong direction after a hot start to the season over the first 10 games.

The crowd on Friday night was the biggest of the season with 6,756 in attendance. It would have been a great chance to build some buzz around the team to join in the fun that the Buffalo Sabres have created. Instead people left with disappointment seeing a team play a messy game.

Here’s how all of the goal scoring unfolded:

Amerks Bounce Back with a Saturday Night Win

$

The Rochester Americans bounced back on Saturday night for a 4-3 win in Binghamton after what the team considered one of the most disappointing losses of the season on Friday. Breaking down the game into three one period games the Amerks won each period and won the game.

Rochester came out playing fast in the first period pressuring Binghamton in their own end for most of it. Through the first 13:30 of the period the Amerks had a 11-0 advantage in shots before the Devils finally got a shot on Scott Wedgewood. Binghamton was able to get eight shots to end the first with most of them coming on a power play chance with Will Borgen in the box for interference.

There weren’t any goals scored but the Amerks showed up ready to play and it was clear the way they were moving the puck.

Zach Redmond scored the first goal of the game and his 13th of the season at 8:19 of the second period. Justin Bailey made a quick move on the board to get the puck to Victor Olofsson in the slot who dropped it off to Redmond who scored from the face-off dot.

Someone forgot how to count resulting in a too many men penalty against the Amerks giving the the Devils their second power play of the game. Nick Lappin passed to a wide open Blake Pietila to tie the game 1-1 at 10:39 of the second.

Kevin Porter scored with 31 seconds left in the second off of a great back handed pass from Alex Nylander who was skating along the goal line. Porter shot from the slot and scored his fifth of the season.

Continuing to pressure Binghamton in the third period the Amerks scored first to take a 3-1 lead at 7:41 of the period. Jack Dougherty shot the puck at the net, CJ Smith appeared to redirect it in front of goalie Mackenzie Blackwood where Wayne Simpson was there to score his sixth of the season.

Rebounds, second chances, third chances, and getting in front of the net. Chris Taylor stressed that last season, has talked about it often this season, and when the players are able to do that they score.

Josh Jacobs scored an odd and pretty easy goal to make it a one goal game at 10:31 of the period. Scott Wedgewood appeared to make a save as the Devils rushed the net and everyone below the face-off circles appeared to believe the play was dead. The puck sat just outside of the crease and Jacobs cruised in to push it into the net.

The penalty kill came up big killing off a double minor call on Brendan Guhle for high sticking with 7:45 left in the third.

Alex Nylander scored an empty net goal with 1:59 to play by forcing a turnover at the blue line and skating down ice. Binghamton wasn’t ready to give up and Egor Sharangovich scored 42 seconds later.

Rochester pressured Binghamton in the first leading the pace of play, scored more in the second, and killing off a four minute penalty gave them the chance to stay in the game and the game winner from Nylander. The Amerks held on for the 4-3 win to split the weekend with a win and a loss.

Scott Wedgewood finished the game with 27 saves to earn his seventh win of the season.

Next weekend Rochester hosts Wilkes-Barre/Scranton on Friday and travels to Binghamton again on Saturday night.

A Look at the First Quarter of the Amerks Season

The Rochester Americans enter the second quarter of the season sitting in first place in the North Division, a spot they’ve been in since the fifth game of the season. They host the Atlantic Division Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins and will have to play without defenseman Lawrence Pilut who was called up on Tuesday and Matt Tennyson who was called up this morning.

The key to the Amerks winning is a fast start and playing a full game. They’ve had two consecutive weekends of playing .500 hockey and in order to stay on top they need to get back to winning weekends.

Here’s a quick look at the first 19 games of the season and where the Amerks are as a team.

Prospects are finally prospects – Lawrence Pilut, CJ Smith, Victor Olofsson, Alex Nylander, Will Borgen, and Sean Malone are legit NHL prospects. For years we’ve had mediocre players built on very little but hype. Pilut is an NHL player that’ll have limited time in Rochester. CJ Smith is an injury away from getting a look as a complete player with a two-way game. Victor Olofsson has a lethal shot and even though he’s appeared to cool off from the start of the season the potential has been seen. Alex Nylander has been a polarizing player for two seasons but has started to emerge as a true prospect as he’s grown into his body. Will Borgen may have the toughest road ahead as a true defensive defenseman but he plays a reliable game on the blue line and looks like he belongs. Sean Malone brings stability to the lineup with his work on face-offs, his defensive game, and hard work. The biggest question mark at the start of the season is Brendan Guhle.

Rasmus Asplund is a prospect but the lack of point production keeps him off that list of a prospect being a legit prospect. He’s contributing in way such as face-off wins and wall play but needs the points to move up. Justin Bailey had a slow start to the season but has been playing better and using his speed to produce points. Danny O’Regan is second on the team with seven goals and has been making an impact in a quiet way.

Inconsistent play is a concern for everyone. Whether it’s not starting a game off on the right foot, taking a period off, or various players going through five to six game stretches without any big contributions.

Kevin Porter and Wayne Simpson have been two reliable AHL players that have been consistent with their play and point production. CJ Smith has benefited from being paired with them on the top line. The one thing that really lacks on the depth charts is a number one center that’s a threat to other teams. Everyone contributes in small ways but there isn’t anyone that has really taken things over the top.

Zach Redmond has 13 goals in 19 games and is on pace for 52 goals which would break American League records as a defenseman. Stats based on pace often start to lose their luster as a season progresses but Redmond hasn’t shown any signs of slowing down. A mix of six power play goals and seven goals playing five on five is sign that his goal scoring is legit. He also leads the league with six game winning goals.

Lawrence Pilut is also pushing league record paces with the potential for 76 assists. His future in Rochester will likely be limited with injuries in Buffalo but when he is here he makes everyone better around him. If you haven’t seen him play in a game you’re missing out.

The team has been sitting in first place since the start of the season but the last five games raises some questions. The last five games they’ve gone 2-2-1, a stretch that started with the 9-4 loss. Prior to that a 12 game stretch where they went 10-1-1 is what has kept them in first place. Was that 12 game stretch a fluke? Are the last five games just a simple rut? There’s only six points that separates first and sixth place in the division. Syracuse is only three points back and is on a 9-0-1-0 stretch and catching up quick. The team has stated the goal of the season is to be an elite team, how will they improve over the second quarter of the season?

Taylor Fedun being traded is a move that may come back to haunt the organization. Injuries are bound to happen and players going up to Buffalo, see Lawrence Pilut, is a a guarantee. In six games played Jack Dougherty has played well in the last four games. Brendan Guhle has not played well in 17 games. The loss of Fedun without anything in immediate return is questionable, a move that won’t really be known until the end of the season.

Nathan Paetsch hasn’t played a game yet this season. The coaching staff says he’ll get a chance to play in a lot of games. He says he’s just waiting for his turn. He appears fine with his role as a mentor and eighth or ninth defenseman on the charts but we’ll be left to wonder if the team isn’t missing out on playing a Calder Cup winning reliable defenseman.

Matt Tennyson was called up today which leaves Paetsch as the only extra defenseman so there’s finally a chance for him to play. That also shows how the Fedun trade could result in depth issues down the road.

Goaltending continues to be a big question mark. Scott Wedgewood (0.893 SV% / 3.26 GAA / 7-3-1-1) and Adam Wilcox (0.890 SV% / 3.15 GAA / 5-2-1-0) have similar stats, stats that aren’t that great. Based on team averages here’s how the Amerks rank against other teams in the North Division:

Syracuse is clearly leading the way which explains their recent run of 9-0-1-0. There’s always more behind these numbers but it’s a starting point. Scott Wedgewood was signed on the first day of free agency making him a top goaltending prospect. Has he been worth it? He’ll need to improve to prove it. Out of 19 games there’s only been one game that comes to mind where the goalie helped steal a win and that was from Adam Wilcox. He made a number of remarkable saves on November 18 vs Hartford to keep the team in the game on the way to a third period comeback win. The team was down 3-1 in the third and won 4-3. Is Wilcox playing too much? Is it more of an issue that Wedgewood hasn’t had the defense in front of him? Questions that will be better answered by mid January.

The Amerks added toughness over the summer by adding Tyler Randell and Yannick Veilleux. They also brought back Dalton Smith. All three players have played well so far and shown the value that they bring when they do play. So far Dalton Smith has been the leader and showing his value. He’s skating well, making plays, and as necessary throwing punches and preventing other teams from pushing the Amerks around. Being pushed around hasn’t happened this season.

There’s only been one injury this season that has really had an impact on the lineup and that’s related to Kyle Criscuolo. He’s been out of the lineup since October when he blocked a shot and has now missed 10 games prior to tonight. They were winning games without him but when they’re losing games they could really use him. His status is considered week to week with a hopeful return in mid December.

Through 19 games the Amerks have scored 71 goals and given up 62. They’re second in the division behind Toronto in goal scoring and third behind Laval and Syracuse for fewest goals allowed. The nine goals scored by Springfield on November 16 really throws those numbers off but it was also the start of the current skid the team is on.

Special teams, like everything else, has been inconsistent. In the first nine games the Amerks had 13 goals on 38 power play opportunities. The last 10 games they’ve only scored three times on 39 power play chances. The penalty kill allowed 10 goals on 38 chances for the opposition in the first nine games. The last 10 games they’ve allowed nine goals on 52 chances for the opposition. That 52 is high after giving up 12 power plays in a game. Overall the power play is 13th in the league at 20.8% and the penalty kill is 24th at 78.3%. Increase those numbers and win more games.

Overall there’s a lot to like about this team but also a lot to be concerned about. They were winning games with everyone contributing in small ways with blocked shots, scoring chances, hits, and other details like staying onside and crisp passes. They’ve gotten away from those little things in a five game stretch which has given opposing teams an opportunity to catch up instead of widening the gap.

Looking at the overall standings by division, conference, and league the Rochester Americans are at the top. The point differences also show how quick things will be able to change with a winning streak or losing streak by any team. At the current pace they’ll be a playoff team but simply making the playoffs isn’t good enough, this team was built to be a contender.

We’re out of the still early in the season stage and entering into the stage of seeing what the team is really capable of.

Bailey and Johansson Lead Amerks in a Lucky Win

In the last two weeks the Rochester Americans have had two concerning losses but in that same span they’ve turned their game around and have won four of the last five and five of the last seven games. Two goals from Justin Bailey on Friday night along with the puck going off two posts in the last seconds helped the Amerks in the 2-1 win over Providence on Friday night.

The power play had struggled over the previous 13 games but the team turned their fortunes around on the first opportunity in the first period.

“We’re preaching getting back to the basics on the power play, just getting pucks to the net. When you have an extra guy good things can happen,” Justin Bailey said after the game.

Rasmus Asplund passed the puck to Brendan Guhle at the blue line, a quick wrist shot, save, and Justin Bailey put the rebound into the net off a back hand. That’s the type of play that was bringing them success early in the season but has gotten away from them.

Up until that goal the first period had a slow start with back and forth action before Rochester took control of the game.

Bailey scored his second of the night and seventh of the season intercepting a pass at the blue line, skating it in alone, and scoring off the back hand again. Rasmus Asplund and Alex Nylander had been battling for the puck along the boards. Providence forced a pass to the middle of the ice where Bailey intercepted it.

The line of Alex Nylander, Sean Malone, and Justin Bailey has been noticeable in recent games. Bailey acknowledged the skill of Nylander and the grit of Malone that has brought them success.

Zach Senyshyn scored 44 seconds into the second period with a power play goal of their own to get the Bruins within one goal. Two quick passes only 11 seconds into the power play was all it took.

Jonas Johansson made the save of the game in the second period as Martin Bakos took a quick shot from the hash marks. Johansson slid across the crease, flung his glove and left pad high in the air to make the save. After the game Johansson said, “I just felt that I didn’t have enough body behind the puck so I just tried to get anything I had up there and it just hit me, I don’t know, pretty lucky. I think it hit my arm.”

“It was a big save, fun to watch, obviously we got caught there two on one but he made a big save for us,” Chris Taylor said about that save.

Providence had a power play with under three minutes to play in the second period but it was Rochester who controlled the two minute span. Justin Bailey had a rush but lost his footing. Wayne Simpson had a breakaway but was tripped up trying to get off a shot. CJ Smith was taken down on a shot attempt and then Rasmus Asplund shot the rebound wide.

Dalton Smith delivered a big hit to Jakub Zboril early in the third period that had sent Zboril to the locker room, I don’t think he returned to the game. Later in the period Austin Fyten challenged Dalton Smith at a face-off and Smith answered the call.

Amerks remained in control in the third period to the point where the Bruins didn’t get their first shot until there was under seven minutes to play. Zach Redmond took a roughing penalty with 4:30 left to play and the penalty kill came up big again.

Asked about getting better at defending one goal leads Chris Taylor said, “Sometimes I think we are and sometimes I don’t know.”

They held on, put the effort in, and consider it a learning experience for players like Brandon Hickey and Will Borgen having to step into those situations.

On Friday night some last second goal posts were the difference makers. Providence pulled their goalie and turned on the pressure. A shot off some posts and the buzzer going off before a puck went in proved to be a nail biter at the end of the game.

Here’s how it happened:

Johansson said, “I think it might of hit me, hit the post, hit my back, might have even hit the other post. Maybe I should take a moment to thank my posts.”

With a smile Chris Taylor said, “We say goalies have good angles when they hit the posts so he had good angles on that one.”

It was a fast paced game where again Rochester stuck to their game plan with contributions from every shift. There was also a bit of luck in the game.

“Sometimes you get lucky, sometimes you get unlucky, and tonight was our night,” Johansson said after his second game of the season with the Amerks and second straight win.

***

Kevin Porter hit a Providence player half way through the third period and only had one shift after that. Chris Taylor called it lower body (looked like possible knee on knee) and they’d know more on Saturday regarding his status. Sean Malone also took a high stick and was thrown to the ice late in the third period. The status for both will be known around game time in Syracuse.

Adam Wilcox is expected to get the start against Syracuse.

Team Meeting and Three Wins Later Amerks are Looking to Separate Themselves

After starting the season winning 10 out of their first 14 games the Rochester Americans suddenly found themselves in a bit of a slump with no one to blame but themselves. On November 16 the team traveled to Springfield where they were embarrassed in a 9-4 loss. Over a seven game span they found themselves finishing with a record of 3-3-1.

That’s not the type of team they want to be. The losses were concerning, the team knew they had to address it, and they had a meeting last Monday. The discussions worked as the team found themselves playing how they wanted to play and finished the week with three wins including a dominating win over Syracuse, a team that had played 13 games without a regulation loss.

The Amerks are currently in first place in the North Division with a record of 16-6-2-0. Last season through 24 games they were 13-5-3-3. They were finding ways to win in overtime, shootouts, and forcing games into overtimes. They were also talking about having fun playing as a hockey team. Fun may have been said too many times as the second half of the season caught up with them.

Talking to Chris Taylor about a change in tone and mindset he said, “Last year was a feel out year for everybody. New coaches, new general managers, new everybody in the organization. I think this year there’s more expectations. We’re trying build that culture that we’re a winning team winning every year and we keep improving each and every year. Our standards are a lot higher. Yea we love coming to work and still having fun but our standards are a lot higher.”

Standards being higher is what made some of the losses in November concerning.

“Last year was fun because we kind of came in, nobody really knew what to expect,” CJ Smith said after practice this week. “We had a huge turnover with staff and players. We kind of set a bar and standard for what we can play at, the level we can play at. Even just a couple weeks ago being a .500 team wasn’t good enough for us. We sat down, had a meeting about it, and got back to our game. It was really big for our confidence.”

Justin Bailey talked about recent games saying, “In the last couple of weeks we weren’t playing to our full potential, I think teams are starting to catch us and we see that. We had a meeting before last weekend and we wanted to make sure that in these games before Christmas that we really make it a point to get as many points as we can. We really started off on the right foot last weekend.”

That meeting was last Monday after a longer video session. The meeting worked.

CJ Smith said, “I thought we came out and played really well, obviously won all three games which is pretty big.” Smith also added, “That game against Syracuse was really big for us in the standings, now we have to keep rolling and get some points here.”

Justin Bailey talked about the win in Syracuse saying, “Just top to bottom we played one of our best games of the year.”

Those three games were a 5-2 win over Utica, 2-1 win over Providence, and 4-3 win over Syracuse.

That was last week. A lot of words that will have little meaning without continuing to win.

Chris Taylor said, “This week is really tough. It’s three division games where we can really separate ourselves from a lot of different teams and that’s what we want to do. You can’t get these games back so we have to take care of them, especially two at home on Wednesday and Friday. Saturday we’ll figure that out on the road.”

They’ll start the week tonight against Binghamton, a team they’ve played twice this season on the road. The last meeting was a 3-0 loss and before that a 4-3 win in Binghamton – a game they barely held on to for the win.

Friday night is home against Cleveland and then both teams play again Saturday night in Cleveland. The games will have a big impact on the standings for someone. The only game against Cleveland was a 5-2 win in Buffalo on November 7.

North Division standings as of 12/12:

Ending the weekend with six out of six points will make a big difference in the standings. The standards are higher and the Amerks want to continue to stay higher in the standings.

“Continue to play the right way,” Chris Taylor said when asked what the key to winning is. “Everybody’s been playing the right way. Doing what we ask, the little things, and sticking together. Everybody is competing hard and having fun.”

There’s that fun word again.

Jonas Johansson is expected to start in net for Rochester tonight. Scott Wedgewood was assigned back to the Amerks this week as well.

Myles Powell was called up from Cincinnati due to Kevin Porter being out with a lowed body injury.

Matt Hunwick is on a conditioning loan and will suit up tonight. Quotes and updates from him:

Dalton Smith will be out of the lineup serving a one game suspension. More on that:

Here’s more on the injuries, practice notes and some winning stats:

Scott Wedgewood Defeats the Cleveland Monsters

That game on Friday night was goalie Scott Wedgewood vs Cleveland Monsters with the goalie coming out on top. Wedgewood had 42 saves in his first game in almost two weeks to back stop the Amerks to a 3-1 win on home ice.

First period ended without a score but Cleveland had a 14-6 advantage in shots in the first 20 minutes. Amerks had an early power play 62 seconds into the game and they fired puck after puck that went wide or over the net hitting the glass. Cleveland took over as the first period went on controlling most of the play.

The lines were changed up in the second period with CJ Smith centering a line with Alex Nylander and Justin Bailey. It paid off at 2:29 of the second period when Alex Nylander scored his seventh goal of the season. Smith and Nylander both went for the puck behind the goal line, Smith poked it free, Justin Bailey took a shot off the pad of Berube and Nylander was there to score on the rebound.

Amerks had more chances in the second period with two different power play opportunities but had no success. Again.

Scott Wedgewood was great in the second period making a few big saves that would be considered excellent scoring chances. That continued into the third period when Cleveland controlled the first 17 minutes out playing, out shooting, and beating Rochester to every puck.

Talking about the save above Scott Wedgewood said, “Prayed on the groins there and found a way to cover it.”

Brendan Guhle owed Wedgewood a big thanks on that as well after getting beat.

Matt Hunwick attempted a long break out pass from inside the Amerks blue line that was intercepted by Monsters defenseman Dean Kukan. The play immediately rushed into the Amerks zone and Wedgewood made a quick pad save. Alex Nylander made a heads up play on the rebound to send the puck out of the zone. Pressure from CJ Smith and Justin Bailey lead the rush, a pass to Brandon Hickey who sent a low rocket shot into the net with 2:51 remaining in the game.

“I’m pretty calm in my net but I threw a fist bump out there,” Wedgewood said in reference to the goal by Hickey. “It’s fun when you’re winning and fun when guys make plays like that and bounce back for you.”

Cleveland pulled their goalie on the next sequence and Danny O’Regan scored an empty net goal 24 seconds after Hickey to give Rochester a 3-1 lead. Victor Olofsson was able to get to the puck on the boards and send it up ice to O’Regan.

A goalie has to steal a game and that’s exactly what Scott Wedgewood did for the Amerks on Friday night. His shutout bid was ruined by a power play goal from Adam Clendening with 73 seconds left in the game but it was too little too late for the Monsters.

Outside of a few big hits from Dalton Smith and a one goal lead in the third period it never felt like a winning game until that empty netter by O’Regan. Good teams find a way to win and that’s what Rochester did. Their goalie was able to keep the game close and they were able to finish it off. You can’t play like that every night but a regulation win against a divisional team is big in the standings.

The same two teams play again Saturday night in Cleveland.

Here’s the goals as they happened:

Adam Wilcox Earns Win Over the Monsters in Overtime

$

0

The wins aren’t always going to come in easy ways and when they aren’t you have to rely on goaltending and that’s what the Rochester Americans did for the second night in a row. Adam Wilcox made 30 saves in the 2-1 overtime winner on the road in Cleveland to end the weekend with back to back wins over the Monsters for the Amerks.

Scott Wedgewood was excellent in stealing a win for the Amerks in a 3-1 win with 42 saves on Friday night. Wilcox didn’t have to steal this win but he had to play strong with a close game in front of him and that’s what he did.

Brendan Guhle scored his third goal of the season, first on the power play, to give the Amerks a 1-0 lead at 17:12 of the second period. Zach Redmond had sent the puck around the boards, Wayne Simpson retrieved the puck, passed it to Guhle, and Guhle scored from the center of the ice at the top of the face off circle. That was Guhle’s first goal in 16 games.

Earlier in the game the first period was even with both teams having nine shots. Up until the goal scored by Guhle both teams had successful killed two penalties each. By the end of the second period the Amerks had a 24-16 advantage in shots.

The third period saw play intensify with a big scrum in the corner after Sonny Milano had taken a swipe at the glove of Adam Wilcox after a save. Dalton Smith, Andrew MacWilliam, Sean Malone, and Jack Dougherty immediately gathered in the corner to share their displeasure.

Nathan Gerbe had one of the games biggest scoring chances as he was all alone in front of Wilcox and tried to go between the legs off a shot/pass from Gabriel Carlsson. Wilcox didn’t bite on the move and made a blocker save.

CJ Smith attempted to clear the puck with 3:17 left in the third but the attempt went over the glass resulting in a delay of game penalty.

It only took six seconds into the power play for Nathan Gerbe to score and tie the game with a quick shot.

With 93 seconds left in regulation there was an attempt down low between Justin Bailey, Alex Nylander, and CJ Smith but they weren’t able to connect on the final pass.

Overtime saw both teams going back and forth with the shot that counted going to CJ Smith with 88 seconds left to play. Justin Bailey sent a perfect pass in front of a Monsters player to Danny O’Regan, O’Regan took a shot, the rebound went off the pads of goalie Jean-Francois Berube to CJ Smith who was skating with his stick up and ready to release a shot.

Monsters starting goalie Matiss Kivlenieks had to leave the game with less than a minute to play due to injury and had finished with 37 saves.

The games weren’t perfect for Rochester this weekend but they still finished the back to back games with two wins, four points to build a gap in the standings, and had great goaltending both nights.

Through 27 games the Amerks have a 18-7-2-0 record and they finish another week in first place. They now have a 6 point lead over the 2nd place Crunch (who still have 3 games in hand), an 8 point lead over the 3rd place Comets (who have played two more games), an 8 point lead over the 4th place Monsters (same amount of games), and a 9 point lead over the 5th place Marlies (same amount of games).

Against those four teams in the North Division the Amerks maintain a winning record so far this season.

3-0-0-0 vs Syracuse
3-0-0-0 vs Cleveland
3-1-0-0 vs Utica
1-0-0-0 vs Toronto

A day off before the team returns to practice in preparation for three home games this upcoming week. Wednesday vs Belleville, Friday and Saturday vs Hartford. Note that the Saturday home game starts at 5:05pm.

Amerks Disappoint Again on a Wednesday Night

$

0

When this Rochester Americans team loses a game they make sure to lose it in a memorable way. They aren’t good memories either. After two disappointing Wednesday night losses at home in a row it’s tough for anyone who was at the game to think about this as a first place team.

Typically when a hockey team has a 3-0 lead in less than 12 minutes of the first period the chances are high that they’re going to win. On Wednesday night the Amerks had that lead and finished the first period with a 4-1 lead. They lost 5-4.

After the game Chris Taylor said, “It wasn’t a good start, it wasn’t a good middle, and it wasn’t a good finish. Definitely disappointed.”

Everyone walking out of the arena was disappointed as well.

“I don’t know what it is about these Wednesday night games but we have to be better than that,” Nathan Paetsch said after the game. “It’s not good enough.”

Nathan Paetsch played in just his second game of the season, the first was on December 1st. He also played on the left wing, a position he’s played before in the past. Chris Taylor said that with Alex Nylander out of the lineup (day to day / lower body) that he thought it was a good chance to get Paetsch into a game.

“We didn’t play good enough,” Victor Olofsson said after the game. “We let up way too many chances and eventually we’re going to have to pay for them.”

Victor Olofsson scored his ninth goal of the season at 4:32 of the first period, was also the first goal of the game. Matt Tennyson prevented the puck from crossing the blue line, spotted Olofsson down low and made a pass into the slot. Less than two minutes later Sean Malone and Matt Tennyson chased down a puck on the side boards, Malone spotted Cornel at the top of the face off circle and Cornel scored his third of the season. Matt Tennyson and Sean Malone earned assists on another goal setting up CJ Smith for a shot from just above the goal line down low.

The Amerks scored three goals on five shots in the first 11:45 of the first period and chased Marcus Hogberg out of the net and to the bench. Filip Gustavasson stepped into the game finishing with 18 saves, one goal allowed, and earned the win.

If the game had remained a 3-0 win those would have been some great highlights. As Olofsson said, they were going to have to pay for letting up.

Chris Taylor also said afterwards, “We have to manage games better.”

Part of that game management is controlling the pace of play instead of rushing down ice, attempt, turnover, play turns around.

Scott Wedgewood was the reason that Rochester stayed in the game as long as they did. There’s two goals he’d probably like to have back but having a team play in front of him would have made a bigger difference. Wedgewood finished the night with 33 saves.

Max McCormick scored a power play goal late in the first period tipping in a shot by Adam Tambellini.

It only took 84 seconds into the second period for the Amerks to take a 4-1 lead. Rasmus Asplund carried the puck down the right side of the ice and took a shot, it went off the pads of Gustavsson, rebound went right to Victor Olofsson on the left side.

Everything was downhill from that point on. There were some moments, some saves, but they’re meaningless when you give up four goals to lose.

Senators forward Rudolfs Balcers scored a power play goal for 5:17 of the second period to get within two. He was standing in the center of the Amerks penalty kill unit and scored off a pass from Christian Wolanin.

Victor Olofsson was in the penalty box for slashing. The officiating was questionable at times but that excuse wouldn’t be valid in trying to explain the loss.

It was still a 4-3 game with less than three minutes left when Justin Bailey, Eric Cornel, and Yannick Veilleux had a three on one chance. Bailey attempted a soft pass to Cornel in the slot. The puck was turned over and Belleville immediately went back the other way in a four on two and scored. Former Amerks defenseman Stuart Percy tied the game 4-4.

Paul Carey scored the game winning come back goal a short 58 seconds later. Stuart Percy pulled the puck out of the air just outside the blue line, dumped the puck back into the Amerks zone where Brandon Hickey was taken off balance trying to stop the puck, it turned into a quick three on two, drop pass, score.

The three goal deficit never slowed the Belleville Senators down. The Rochester Americans slowed down while failing to play a two way game and they paid for it.

Lineup notes…

As mentioned above, Alex Nylander missed the game due to a lower body injury and is considered day to day. He also missed practice on Tuesday.

The two healthy scratches were Dalton Smith and Devante Stephens.

One interesting note about Dalton Smith is that out of 104 possible games with Dalton Smith on the Amerks roster the team has a winning record when he plays, a losing record when he does not. The team is 39-26 w/ Dalton Smith in the lineup and 16-23 without. They’re also 0-3 in the playoffs, he didn’t play in any of the three playoff games last season. 2018/2019 – With: 16-4-0-0 // Without: 2-5-2.  2017/2018 – With: 23-13-7-2 // Without: 14-9-4-4 // Playoffs without: 0-3

Kyle Criscuolo returned to team practice this week and is probably to play this weekend. He has been out since October 26 with a lower body injury.

Kevin Porter is out as well with a lower body injury and isn’t expected back into the lineup until mid January.

Criscuolo Excited for Return Tonight; Back to Back vs Hartford

The Rochester Americans have back to back home games this weekend hosting the Hartford Wolf Pack and they’ll have a forward back in the lineup that has missed a majority of the season so far – Kyle Criscuolo. He was injured in a game against Utica on October 26 and has been out of the lineup since missing 19 games with a lower body injury.

Criscuolo returned to practice this week with the team after a lot of skating on his own to get back into game shape and make sure he’s healthy. Knowing he’ll be playing he said, “I’m very excited to get playing again and get back into game mode, it’s going to be a fun one.”

In a short nine games he had 4 points (1G+3A) and the Amerks had a record of 6-2-1-0. In the 19 games since the team has gone 12-6-1-0 without him.

Chris Taylor talked about having him back in the lineup saying, “You can’t replace a guy with his character first and foremost in the dressing room and on the ice. His penalty killing, tenacious forechecking, and his face offs. We missed a lot of that from him and it’s great to have him back.”

After watching practices and games from the stands for almost two months it’s time to get back to the part that matters most, a game.

“I think there’s nothing really like a game especially when you battle with these guys every single day of the year in practice,” Criscuolo said after practice on Thursday. “The biggest thing is you want to have fun during the game and obviously Wednesday wasn’t fun a game, I think we just need to get back to enjoying the game and playing hard. I’m definitely excited, Christmas came a little early for me.”

He’ll be centering a line with CJ Smith and Wayne Simpson, one of those two players he’s very familiar with, that player being CJ Smith.

I asked Criscuolo if they’ll pick up right where they left off and he said, “He (CJ Smith) was saying in practice the first couple of reps he didn’t touch the puck and I was saying I was just getting to know Simpson because I’ve played with you enough.”

These two games before the Christmas break are important not only for the standings but also redeeming themselves after Wednesday night. Comparing year over year the Amerks record is similar two games before the break. Last season before the break they were 17-6-3-3, this season they’re 18-8-2-0.

Talking about last season versus this season Criscuolo said, “I think last year we were in a similar situation around Christmas and we saw that if you take your foot off the gas you can slowly drop. You need to peaking at the right time so we need to keep building every week. We can’t take any weeks off here. We just need to keep pushing and make sure we’re getting better come playoff time and not going in the other direction.”

After practice on Thursday the game the night before, a 5-4 loss after leading 4-1, was briefly touched on.

“We get a chance to redeem ourselves Friday and Saturday,” Zach Redmond said after the skate. “Watched, learned from it, and now we’re putting it behind us.”

The games may not always go the way the team wants them to go for various reasons but they have a season long plan and they’re sticking with it.

Asked about the practice the morning after the loss Chris Taylor said, “Everything was normal. I don’t change anything up. We try to plan everything in the summer what we want to do. Sometimes we make a few different changes during the season but we go as planned in what we think is best for the players, not out of what we think happened during the night.”

“We moved forward as soon as we got here this morning. We did our things that we needed to to plan and get ready for Friday. You have to put those out of your mind,” Taylor added. “You don’t want to forget but you want to learn from those things. It wasn’t what we wanted or what we expected. The guys aren’t happy, we weren’t happy, no one was happy. we just have to move forward and worry about Friday night now.”

They’re aware of who they’re playing on a nightly basis but that doesn’t mean they’re going to change their team identity in terms of how they play. Well, that isn’t the plan at least. As we’ve seen two Wednesdays in a row things can happen differently.

Zach Redmond said, “It doesn’t matter who you’re playing and to be honest we’ve had kind of less success against teams that maybe we should have on paper been better against. It doesn’t matter at all, you have to approach the game the same way every time and I think that’s something we’re working towards. We have two thirds of the season left to kind of figure all that out before playoffs just how to be consistent and bring the same effort every night.”

“We want to get both of these games,” Criscuolo said talking about this weekend. “Hartford’s a pretty good team, so just need to focus on us right now and take it one game at a time.”

Alex Nylander returned to skating this morning but appears as if he’ll miss the game tonight. He was the only extra forward on the ice for extra skating time.

Scott Wedgewood is expected to get the start in net tonight. On Wednesday night his 33 saves were able to keep the Amerks in the game longer than they probably should have been.

Zach Redmond has slowed down in the goal scoring column and one of the reasons might be Lawrence Pilut called up to the Sabres.

Redmond w/ Pilut in the lineup – 16GP 18PTS (13G+6A)
Redmond w/o Pilut in the lineup – 12GP 6PTS (1G+5A)

Redmond paired w/ Pilut has 7G+2A and those 7G were all assisted on by Pilut. That’s half his goals this season. On the flip side, Pilut has 3G, two of those were assisted by Redmond.

Amerks Tripped Up by Wolf Pack

This recap is directly from Amerks.com

(Rochester, NY) … The Rochester Americans (18-9-2-0) and Hartford Wolf Pack (13-14-1-2) combined for four goals in the second period before the Wolf Pack tacked on two more in the third to come away with a 4-2 win in the first of back-to-back meetings between the two teams Friday at The Blue Cross Arena. The loss was Rochester’s second straight this week, marking just the second time all season the Amerks were held winless in consecutive games.

Despite the loss, the Amerks have won seven of their last 11 games overall and maintain a three-point lead atop the AHL’s North Division standings heading into tomorrow night’s rematch with Hartford, the final game before the Christmas break.

Reigning Amerks Rookie of the Year C.J. Smith extended his goal-scoring streak to a career-best four straight games as he tallied a goal and an assist while Wayne Simpsonchipped in his ninth marker of the campaign. Goaltender Scott Wedgewood appeared in his 14th game in the last 21 for the Amerks but suffered his second straight loss as he stopped 26 of 30 shots he faced. The netminder shows a record of 9-6-1 in 17 appearances this season with Rochester.

Hartford forward Vinni Lettieri registered a season-high three points as he led the Wolf Pack, who entered the matchup with 2-6-0-2 record in their last 10 contests, to the win. Steven Fogarty notched a pair of points (1+1) while John Gilmour and Chris Bigras rounded out the scoring for the visitors. Netminder Dustin Tokarski got the start in the crease and made 28 saves to improve his season record to 7-3-1 in 12 appearances.

After a scoreless first period and trailing 1-0 at the 12:13 mark of the middle frame, the Amerks countered with a pair of goals just 32 seconds apart to flip the deficit into a 2-1 advantage.

With the puck in the center of the Hartford zone, Simpson spun and fired off a backhanded shot that was denied by Tokarski. Smith somehow was able to gather the rebound through the ensuing scramble and dished a one-time feed to Simpson in-between the dots, where he made good on the second opportunity. Kyle Criscuolo, who returned the lineup tonight following a 19-game absence, also earned an assist on Simpson’s ninth of the season.

Continuing to ride the wave of energy, Rochester drew a penalty on the ensuing shift and needed only four seconds on the man-advantage to grab its first lead of the contest.

A face-off win to the right of Tokarski by Danny O’Regan went right to Smith at the top of the zone. The second-year forward drifted to the center of the blueline before stepping into a shot that appeared to change before ultimately getting through traffic and past the Hartford netminder.

Smith’s 11th marker of the season with 3:22 left in the second period was the Amerks’ third straight game with a power-play goal, the longest since the club had scored in four consecutive contests with the extra man from Oct. 10 to Oct. 17.

“I feel pretty good with my game lately as the pucks seem to be going into the net,” Smith said. “I’ve had a good run and I’m just trying to stay consistent. I’m trying to continue to get better. It was nice to have ‘Crisco’ back in the lineup, but too bad we weren’t able to pull it out with the win tonight.”

Rochester’s 2-1 lead was short-lived as Lettieri jumped on a turnover at center ice and raced in all alone towards Wedgewood. He hesitated before tucking the puck past the sixth-year goaltender to even the score at 2-2 before the intermission break.

“After we grabbed the lead, we allowed a quick goal afterwards,” Simpson said. “I didn’t think we got going after that. It was unfortunate as we started to lose the one-on-one battles and sort of got undisciplined.”

Hartford used the late goal and grabbed a one-goal lead 5:35 into final period as Fogarty stuffed the puck just inside the right post seconds before Wedgewood could slide across his crease. The Wolf Pack doubled their lead seven minutes later to seize control of the game.

Rochester attempted to mount a comeback as Wedgewood was pulled for the extra attacker for the final three minutes of the contest, but Tokarski and company remained calm and held on for the 4-2 win.

“We started off the game well and I thought we played a good game,” said Amerks head coach Chris Taylor. “It wasn’t until a couple turnovers cost us and another power-play goal. That hurt us, and our penalty kill has to step it up.”

The same two teams have another go-around to close out their back-to-back set on Saturday, December 22 at 5:05 p.m. All of the action from The Blue Cross Arena will be carried live on The Sports Leader AM 950/ 95.7 FM ESPN Rochester and AHLTV.

Recap of the Last 5 Games (Games 26-30)

Welcome to the sixth part of a 15 part season series highlighting the last five games (the last segment will be six games) showing off the stats, standings, highlights, transactions and whatever else took place prior to the next five games. The goal is to post these the day of the next game of a five game set. A little different than a weekly format to give us a better snapshot of trends as the season goes.

The team finished the last five games with a record of 2-3-0-0 and are heading into the game tonight looking to put a three game losing streak behind them, the first time the team had lose three in a row in regulation all season. They’re still in first place in the North Division but have fallen to third overall in the conference.

Not good is the simple way to summarize the last five games. Solid goaltending resulted in back to back wins against Cleveland but those wins had little meaning after losing the next three all on home ice. They had a 3-0 lead over Belleville before losing 5-4 and then lost the next two against Hartford.

Leaders in just the last five:

  • CJ Smith (4G+2A)
  • Victor Olofsson (2G+1A)
  • Danny O’Regan (1G+2A)
  • Matt Tennyson (3A)
  • Justin Bailey (3A)

Only two players scored more than two goals in the last five games, CJ Smith and Victor Olofsson. The two goals by Olofsson were in one game. CJ Smith scored a goal in four of the last five games and continues to be the team leader in terms of consistency.

Leading the Season:

  • Zach Redmond – 25 points (14G+11A)
  • CJ Smith – 25 points (11G+14A)
  • Victor Olofsson – 24 points (10G+14A)
  • Lawrence Pilut – 22 points (3G+19A)
  • Alex Nylander – 20 points (7G+13A)

At time earlier in the season the American League top 10 scorers were dominated by Amerks players. They’re not even in the top 20 anymore unless we look at just defenseman.

Looking at just leaders on defense, Zach Redmond and Lawrence Pilut are still near the top but former Amerk TJ Brennan is at the top spot earning points with consistency.

Zach Redmond continues to be on pace to break the all-time single season Amerks record for goals by a defenseman but the pace he was on to break that before the end of December has come to a halt. There’s still a chance with three games remaining this month but he only has one goal in the last 11 games. The record is 18 goals and he has 14 goals in 30 games.

More than Just Points

Three straight regulation losses can derail the current pace of progress for a season. The potential to build a gap faded and even though they’re still in first place everyone else has caught up.

Alex Nylander missed two games with a lower body injury and Brendan Guhle missed two games while called up to Buffalo. The absence of Nylander may have been felt a little more than Guhle but the two games they missed that were losses shouldn’t be directly attributed to them missing from the lineup.

Kyle Criscuolo returned from injury after missing 19 games and had one assist in two games played.

CJ Smith and Danny O’Regan are the only two players putting up points at a somewhat consistent pace. Lawrence Pilut is still fourth on the team in points even though he’s now missed almost half of the season so far.

There’s struggles with large gaps in scoring that stretches beyond just the last five games with all the top names on the roster including Zach Redmond, Victor Olofsson, Alex Nylander, Justin Bailey, Rasmus Asplund, and Sean Malone.

  • Zach Redmond only has one goal in his last 11 games.
  • Victor Olofsson has two goals in his last eight games, both goals from one game.
  • Alex Nylander has three goals in his last 19 games.
  • Justin Bailey has two goals in his last 14 games, both goals from one game.
  • Rasmus Asplund only has one goal in 30 games.
  • Sean Malone only has two goals in 18 games.

Goal tending from Scott Wedgewood and Adam Wilcox won them two games against Cleveland but didn’t do anything to steal wins the three games after. It doesn’t help when the team isn’t scoring in front of them.

One interesting note about Dalton Smith is that out of 106 possible games with Dalton Smith on the Amerks roster the team has a winning record when he plays, a losing record when he does not. The team is 39-27 w/ Dalton Smith in the lineup and 16-24 without. They’re also 0-3 in the playoffs, he didn’t play in any of the three playoff games last season.

  • 2018/2019
    • With: 16-5-0-0
    • Without: 2-5-2
  • 2017/2018
    • With: 23-13-7-2
    • Without: 14-9-4-4
    • Playoffs without: 0-3

Is Dalton Smith the reason the team has lost games? Not entirely but there’s a clear difference that it’s worth a discussion that he is a difference maker.

Goals and Shots

It’s pretty simple, score more than the other team and win. The Amerks weren’t able to do that and it shows in the losses. Third period goals against immediately stands out being outscored 8-3. Overall goal scoring has become an issue.

The team is putting up shots on net but what they aren’t getting are the second and third chances that teams rely on to score. Marek Mazanec was outstanding in net as well in game 30. After that game Chris Taylor said they put up 91 shot attempts (including the 41 that counted). Sounds great on paper but when you lose 5-1 there’s more needed than shot attempts.

Special Teams

Power play is currently 19th in the league at 18.6% (Previously 17th in the league at 19.4%)

Penalty kill is currently 28th in the league at 77.7% (Previously 24th in the league at 78.9%)

Both special teams units continue to go in the wrong direction. They’ve been in a steady decline after every five game recap with no signs of improvement. They scored three power play goals in the last five games but it wasn’t enough to improve overall numbers.

PP and PK in games 26-30 by period:

Standings

Heading into the 31st game of the season the Amerks continue to stay in first place in the North Division based on points. Syracuse continues to have an advantage looking at winning percentage and still has three games in hand. The Amerks locker room had a goal of building a gap in the standings before they went into the Christmas break but the three game losing streak stalled that effort.

For the first time they’ve dropped to third overall in the Eastern Conference in points, fifth overall in winning percentage. Teams know that the Amerks can be beat. As we near the halfway point of the season the team is quickly going from a top team dominating to still being a decent team but not considered elite in the league.

Amerks Return from Break with a Shutout Win Over Cleveland

The Rochester Americans returned from Christmas break with a 4-0 shutout win on the road in Cleveland powered by three power play goals. The team had three days off, took a four hour bus ride to Cleveland on Wednesday, and won in a decisive fashion ending a three game losing streak.

Overall the Amerks played a 60 minute game and every time they’ve done that this season they’ve won. There were contributions from every skater on the ice in various ways which helped Scott Wedgewood earn his third shutout of the season.

Alex Nylander scored the first goal of the game, which turned out to be the game winning goal, at 7:35 of the first period by finding a loose puck in front of the net and beating Monsters goalie Matiss Kivlenieks. Brendan Guhle earned the primary assist with a shot on net off a centering pass from Justin Bailey. That was the first of three power play goals for Rochester.

Through the first 10 minutes of the second period the Amerks continued to control the pace of play and had a 7-1 advantage in shots, they weren’t giving the Monsters any opportunities on the defensive side of the game.

CJ Smith carried the puck in from just below the blue line with what felt like all the time in the world to score a power play goal with 4:20 left in the second period. Danny O’Regan and Victor Olofsson had assists on the play for winning a puck battle in the corner. With that goal CJ Smith moved into the team lead in points for the first time all season.

It took just over four minutes into the third period for Wayne Simpson to score off of a great back handed pass from Kyle Criscuolo after a face off win. Criscuolo won positioning on the puck at the face off, used his back hand to put the puck towards the net and Simpson was quick on the draw to score.

With the sixth power play chance of the night Kyle Criscuolo scored his first goal since returning to the lineup from an injury. Great passing from CJ Smith to Olofsson to Criscuolo lead to the tic-tac-toe goal.

The Monsters had more shots in the third than the Amerks finishing the period with an 11-6 advantage but Scott Wedgewood had a lot of help in front of him to complete the 31 save shutout for his tenth win of the season.

CJ Smith moved into the top spot on the team in points with a goal and assists, he now has 27 points (12G+15A). Victor Olofsson had two assists which puts him in second overall on the team at 26 points (10G+16A).

Overall it was a 60 minute game with four lines of forwards, three defensive pairs, and solid goaltending. The key to every Amerks win and they’re not 4-0 against Cleveland this season.

They Amerks are at home Friday night to host the Toronto Marlies.

***

In case you’re wondering about the jerseys, this was the first of two Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle themed nights between the Amerks and Monsters. The Amerks were the foot clan and the Monsters were the turtles. They’ll wear the same jerseys in Rochester on March 22.

***

Lineup notes:

Matt Tennyson and Sean Malone were out of the game with unknown injuries and are considered day to day.

Vasily Glotov played in his first game of the season with the Amerks and only second of his career. He didn’t finish with any points or shots but was effective on the ice playing defensively.

Yannick Veilleux sat the game out for his first of a two game suspension.

Dalton Smith is a Difference Maker in Rochester

$

The role of the stereotypical fourth liner in hockey has evolved over the last 10 to 15 years from being a goon that was pure intimidation to now being the muscle on the ice that can provide intimidation but also needs to be able to play hockey. There was a time not too long ago where that muscle only played a handful of shifts a game, now you have to be able to play a regular shift if you want to stay employed. You could say they’re the last of the enforcers.

One of those players on the Rochester Americans roster is Dalton Smith. In his second season with Rochester he has the trust of management, coaches, and teammates with his role on the team. He’s a difference maker as well. Carrying over from last season to this season the Amerks have won more games with Dalton Smith in the lineup than they have without him.

Out of 110 possible regular season and playoff games the Amerks have a record of 41-26 with him in the lineup and a record of 16-27 without. This season through 31 games the team is 17-5 when Dalton Smith plays, 2-7 when he doesn’t. During the 2017/2018 season the team was 24-21 with, 14-17 without, and 0-3 in the three playoff games that he was scratched in. (Combine overtime and shootout losses to straight losses)

The winning record is something that Dalton is aware of saying it had been brought up to him and with a smile said, “It’s something to be proud of and hope it continues.”

There’s a lot more that goes into a team winning a hockey game than one player who only has five points (2G+3A) in those 67 games played but it’s enough of a sample size to show he is a difference maker.

Dalton Smith was a second round draft pick by the Columbus Blue Jackets in 2010 and it’s been a bumpy road to this point but he’s carving out his place in the game and showing his value to the lineup. It helps that he has a family that has spent a lot of time playing professional hockey.

His father Derrick Smith went to the Stanley Cup finals twice with the Philadelphia Flyers in the 1980s over the course of his 10 year NHL career. His uncle Keith Primeau played 15 seasons with four different teams. Another uncle, Wayne Primeau, was a member of the 1996 Calder Cup winning Rochester Americans – the last time the Amerks won the cup. Wayne Primeau played 15 seasons in the NHL with four of those in a Buffalo Sabres jersey. Between his father and uncles, they played in 2,520 NHL games combining both the regular season and playoffs.

“He watches every game and calls me frequently to give me tips and advice. He tells me good or bad what i have to do,” Dalton said when asked about advice he gets from his father. “He played the game for a while and knows what he’s talking about. It’s nice having a reliable source in my ear telling me and keeping me going so it’s awesome.”

When he found out he was going to be playing in Rochester he had talked to Wayne about the city, the different areas, and the Calder Cup. When you don’t have that much control over what city you end up playing in it’s exciting for a player to land in a city where a family member played before and won a championship.

Dalton hasn’t had the same start to his professional career as his father and uncles but they keep him going with advice, support, and off season training.

His only NHL contract was his entry level deal with the Columbus Blue Jackets that expired at the end of the 2014/2015 season. Columbus traded him to Tampa which saw him move from Springfield to Syracuse. He wasn’t signed after that season and started the 2015/2016 season on a PTO (professional try-out) with Providence. His chance to earn a standard contract was diminished when he broke his hand. After healing up he landed an opportunity on another PTO with Lehigh Valley to end the season.

Going into his second straight summer with an unknown future and limited opportunities he was invited to the Charlotte Checkers training camp. When that finished he reached an agreement with the Florida Everblades in the ECHL, a step back from where he wanted to be.

“I was really hoping to kind of be down there short team and get a call up right away. That obviously didn’t happen and it was in the back of my mind not knowing what’s going to happen, if I’m going to have to play a couple more years in the East Coast, or go over to Europe,” he said when asked about questioning if he’d ever play a higher level in North America again. “I didn’t know what was going to happen and then I was very fortunate to get the opportunity here. I just want to take advantage of it and do the best I can to stay here as long as I can and do whatever is asked of me.”

Last season with the Amerks he played in 45 games and had 102 penalty minutes along with one goal and one assist. He was also scratched in the three playoff games. The Amerks were pushed around by the Crunch in those games and they were swept in three games.

At the end of the season Dalton was told by management and coaches that they were happy with the way he played and how he stuck up for his teammates. A contract renewal still wasn’t guaranteed.

“When I got the call from my agent saying that they did want me back it was a huge sigh of relief especially after the last few summers,” Dalton said. “They’ve been long ones not having any contracts so it was nice getting it done early and it was a huge weight off my shoulders.”

Rochester wanted to add more of a physical element to their game by playing hard, playing fast, not allow teams to push them around, and having players that would take pride in that role. That’s why Dalton was brought back and the team also signed Tyler Randell and Yannick Veilleux.

“It definitely helps to have those guys that push you every day. They play that role as well and they play it really well,” Dalton said. “We always stress here the internal competition and its going to bring up the best in our team. Its definitely in the back of my mind that if I don’t do it one of those guys will. We’re all hungry and we all want to play so its nice to have that internal competition to keep you honest every night.”

At a time when teams in the American League, especially the Amerks, like to be a four line team, it requires a player to be consistent if they want to be in the lineup. The common fourth line is expected to play the role of creating time and space for everyone else – a task that isn’t easy to keep up with. There’s also the fighting as well, something that happens less frequently and when you have a big right like Dalton there’s also fewer willing participants.

Sometimes on Twitter we refer to creating time and space as Dalton Smith things. Hits, fights, scrums, checking players into benches, and just being an overall pest.

“I think that’s always been my role and my identity,” Dalton said. “As I’ve matured I’ve kind of gotten better at it and figured out how to be more consistent at it because it is tiring hitting, checking, being loud, and being a pest sometimes. It does kind of wear on you. During the summers I’ve been working on my conditioning more so I can do it all the time and be more consistent.”

When asked to compare his play from last season to this season he said, “Just being more consistent. There were stretches where I did it well (his role) but then I kind of tired out and got more fatigued. This year I’ve just done a good with my conditioning and keeping it going throughout game to game.”

The job doesn’t go unnoticed. When I asked CJ Smith about the role that Dalton plays his tone perked up to describe what he brings saying, “You have to give credit to the whole line. They create a lot of time and space for the rest of us guys. They go out there and they have a minute shift in the offensive zone obviously just wreaking havoc, throwing bodies. I think when you get a couple shifts like that from a line I think the defense sits back a little bit and they’re a little more hesitant to go into those 50/50 puck battles and maybe a little less aggressive on the puck. I think it gives us other guys a little more time and space.”

“They’re not just out there running around not playing the game either,” CJ Smith said. “They’re getting over pucks and getting pucks to the net and just as many scoring chances as anybody else. It’s big for any team when you can trust four lines and roll four lines.”

Having the trust of your teammates and coach to contribute to the game versus being a liability is one of many ways the traditional fourth line has changed over the years.

“I’m very fortunate to have him as a coach, he’s shown a lot of trust in me,” Smith said when asked about earning the trust of Chris Taylor. “There’s been a few games where we’ve been out there the last few minutes of a period. Earlier on in my career I would never be out there in those situations but he’s put a lot of trust in me and I’m very grateful for that and I want to continue to prove that he can trust me in those situations.”

Chris Taylor talked about Dalton Smith saying, “He’s been playing great and he keeps improving. Sometimes it takes longer than others to get that. I thought last year he started improving. He kept on getting better at practice, we did a lot of development with him, and I believe this year its really paying off for him.”

“Him, Cornell, Veilleux, Randell, all the guys that play that role,” Taylor added. “I have full trust in everybody and its nice to see them get rewarded and that’s the way it should be. We’re a four line team and play it well.”

One of the rewards he’s talking about was a recent goal against Syracuse by that line. Dalton Smith initiated a hit in the neutral zone which created space for Tyler Randell to skate the puck into the Crunch zone and score.

Kyle Criscuolo recently sat out 19 games due to a lower body injury which gave him a lot of time to watch from the stands. Asked about Dalton he perked up much like CJ Smith from standard media answers and said, “I think honestly he’s one of the most effective guys on our team right now. No matter when he’s on the ice whether we’re winning or losing he’s intimidating the other team and he’s actually creating a lot of offense for us and making sure their defense doesn’t want to go back for the puck. He’s somebody that’s going to protect his teammates. It was actually unbelievable watching him in the stands, you really get to see what he brings every night.”

Players like D. Smith, Randell, and Veilleux know that there’s less players like them around hockey and to keep playing they have to keep contributing.

“There’s definitely less and it’s something I constantly have to evolve with the game,” Dalton said. “This year I’ve worked on my skating a lot to kind of evolve my game and be effective and be able to get in on the forecheck on these faster defensemen and hit them and stuff. I think I just need to keep evolving with the game and hopefully it will work out.”

After the first quarter of last season his playing time wasn’t consistent. As an exempt veteran (more than 260 games, less than 320) it appeared on paper that he might have a tougher time breaking into the lineup again this season with the addition of Randell and Veilleux. The internal competition appears to have helped along with working on conditioning and skating because the team is finding Dalton to be a valuable member of the roster – contributing vs taking anything away from chances of winning.

He knows he’s very fortunate to be playing in his sixth season the American League because there’s a lot of players that never reach it this far. The odds aren’t in his favor but that isn’t going to stop him from chasing the ultimate goal.

“Its everyone’s goal in this locker room to reach the NHL at some point. Something I’ve learned throughout the years is that not everyone’s journey is the same so it’s something I keep in the back of my mind. It’s a goal i definitely work towards every day.”

His future hasn’t been written but and even if that means sticking around the American League he said, “I just want to keep playing as long as I can. I love hockey and whatever it takes to make a career or living out of it is great.”

Amerks Split the Weekend vs Toronto and Utica

The Rochester Americans split the weekend with a controlling 5-1 win over the Toronto Marlies followed by a battle against Utica that resulted in a 4-3 loss.

In front of a crowd of just over 8,000 people the Amerks had goals from five different players along with strong goaltending again from Scott Wedgewood when they beat North Division rival Toronto Marlies. The first period was a back and forth game before the Amerks unleashed the goal scoring in the second period. Wayne Simpson, Zach Redmond, Brendan Guhle, and Justin Bailey all scored goals while the team only allowed one goal against. Simpson had scored short handed, Redmond scored on the power play. Danny O’Regan scored another power play goal in the third period to finish the scoring. Scott Wedgewood finished with 35 saves.

The team traveled to Utica on Saturday night where things didn’t go as well with the end result. Utica took a 2-0 lead in the first half of the first period and the Amerks had to play on their toes the rest of night trying to catch up. A turnover in the neutral zone and a five on three goal against were factors in those two goals against. The power play statistics did improve with two power play goals. CJ Smith scored late in the first to get the Amerks within a goal. There were no goals in the second. Eric Cornel scored a power play goal early in the third to tie the game.  An intercepted clearing attempt resulted in a quick goal by Brendan Gaunce for the Comets to take a 3-2 lead. Darren Archibald gave Utica a 4-2 lead with 43 seconds left to secure the win. Justin Bailey scored with 12 seconds left in a last minute push but it wasn’t enough.

Sabres Recall CJ Smith from the Amerks

The Buffalo Sabres called up a forward for the first time this season on Monday morning by calling on CJ Smith, the most consistent player on the Amerks roster this season.

CJ Smith is tied for the team lead in points at 29 (13G+16A) and of all the forwards on the roster has the most goals. The 13 goals includes three power play goals and two short handed goals. Five of his 16 assists are from the power play. CJ Smith is also tied for third in the American League with 108 shots on net.

Shoot first mentality is something that the organization has been stressing for two seasons now and CJ Smith has listened.

Phil Housley told the Buffalo media this morning that they’re just trying to give the Sabres offense a spark as they’ve been struggling with secondary scoring.

Earlier this month CJ Smith finished getting his degree at UMass Lowell and at the end of the month he earns his first call up to the NHL.

He did play two games with the Sabres at the end of the 2016/2017 season immediately after signing as a free agent.

The Amerks are now down to only one healthy player leading up to their game on Wednesday when they host Bridgeport. That extra player is Nathan Paetsch, someone that can play any position. Alex Nylander, Kevin Porter, Matt Tennyson, and Andrew Oglevie are all on the injured list.
